I am afraid you will have to keep trying. If it fits on pin then it must attach on another pin object to enable the retention system to work.

Where are screws located that access main motor

If the model is the same as pictured, the screws should be visible.
If the model is older like I think it is, the screws are going to be a tad tough to get to, but not impossible.

First you will need to take the bag door off. Open it like you would to change the bag and then push the bag door back farther so that the hinges "pop" out. Generally how i do it is put it on the counter, with the bag facing you, open as far as you can, grab the top portion of the bag door and push it back quickly.

Now, when the bag door is off, with a flat screw driver, the colored housing above the gray bumper will come off. insert the flat screwdriver in there and pry it open a touch. do that to the other side as well. Once both sides are open, you want to slide the screwdriver towards the back of the unit and gently pry the back off.

under there you will find 2 screws (if you need to go that far at this point) and you can remove the back of the unit easily.

Good luck,
Mark

Better bar doesn't rotate, kenmore whispertone 100

Most likely your belt wore out and broke.
Here is a handy vacuum repair tutorial that should get you back cleaning.

Below is a short excerpt from the instructions. The link above will take you to the full version with images.
When your vacuum starts to lose cleaning power, requiring multiple passes to get an area clean, or the self-propulsion loses its zip, chances are you need to change the vacuum agitator belt. After only a few months of use, most vacuum belts stretch out enough to slip, causing the agitator to spin more slowly.
Replacing the belt is quick and inexpensive. New belts are available starting at about $5. Belts come in numerous brands and sizes, so bring the old one to the store for a guaranteed match.
Fifteen minutes, two screwdrivers and a new belt are all you’ll typically need to complete the job.

Kenmore whispertone 100 model 116. powerhead no

  • The motor / cord compartment cover must be removed to access the cord reel. There are four screws that hold the cover to the chassis. Two of the screws are found under the cord-retractor-foot-pedal on the top back of the canister. To access these screws the pedal must be removed. To do this, press the pedal down and look (from the top) for the four plastic clips that attach/hold the pedal hinges to the cover. There are two at the end corners and two in the middle. Using a long, thin flat-head screw driver (or similar instrument) press each clip to unhook/popout the hinges. Note: the foot pedal spring will also come out when the pedal is removed.

The other two screws are found under the curved hinges of the vaccum bag compartment cover. To access these, lift the cover as if accessing the vacuum bag. Keep pulling the cover back until the hinges release from the motor cover. Don't worry, it is disigned to do this and will not break but it may require a little force. A long phillip-head screw driver will be needed to access and remove each screw
