It sounds like a refrigeration problem possibly a leak in the system or compressor is not kicking on. Either way its probably cheaper to replace the dehumidifier.

My crosley dehum. acted the same way. It turned out to be a bad defrost thermostat on the evaporator coil.

if you can verify that the compressor is still active (is there a noticeable hum or buzz and / or do the room lights slightly dim during power on?) then the most likely problem is a loss of freon. if the compressor never turns on, then a faulty humidistat is likely...an electrician can run a test of this by "jumpering it out" to force on the compressor motor.

It may very well be that you have the humidity extraction level set to high. Lower it to 32-35%. If you have a manual unit, set the control to Maximum. Since it's a basement application, raising the unit up off the floor on to a sturdy table or counter top that can handle the weight of the unit, plus a full bucket of water, may also solve the problem. As, the air temp at floor level is colder than at chest or shoulder level. Dehumidifiers do not work well at temperatures between 40 - 60 degrees F. Unless you have what's called a Low Temp Model. They are specifically designed for basement applications.

There must be some sort of deformity on the fan blade and this makes it unbalance. Unbalanced fan blade will surely affect the bushing of the fan motor which will tend to over heat during operation. You better replace both the fan and the blade.

Shinn, I'd say you've gotten your monies worth out of 6 year old dehumidifier. Most of the time, it's more expensive in the end, to repair one than it is to purchase a new one. With that said, I'd vote for purchasing a new one. Just take as good of care of the new one as your did the old one. Obviously, you performed preventive maintenance on the old one and that's very important. Which makes you the exception to the rule, that most consumers don't take care of what they have and are astonished when an appliance fails.
