Canon DW 100 DVD-RW Burner Questions & Answers
Did not burn dvd
The DW-100 burns files in the same format as they were originally recorded by your camcorder. The Canon Vixia HG-21 records in AVCHD--a high-definition format--which is completely different from standard-definition DVD and which is not compatible with regular DVD players (even though the disc itself is a standard DVD-R). As it states in the manual for the camcorder, "High-definition (AVCHD) discs created using the optional DW-100 DVD
Burner can be played back only with AVCHD-compatible DVD players."
The DW-100 is really more for archiving
your files in their native format than for creating standard DVDs that
can be played on regular DVD players. Regular (standard-definition) DVD players
can't play AVCHD, although many Blu-Ray players can. Unless you use a
Blu-Ray player that supports AVCHD playback, there are two solutions to
your problem:
1. If you want to keep your recordings high-def,
you can view them by playing them back with the DW-100, which must be
connected to your camcorder via the USB cable, then from your camcorder
to your TV via an HDMI cable.
2. If you want to have standard
DVDs that you can play on any DVD player, either import the files to
your computer and convert them to standard-definition using
video-editing software, then burn them to DVD with your computer's DVD
burner, or connect the analog output (component=better, composite=good)
to a stand-alone DVD recorder (i.e. not the DW-100).
I've used
the route of Vixia HF-10 camcorder > composite output > Panasonic
DMR-ES25S DVD recorder (about $65 used on eBay) with pretty good
results when I've wanted to give videos to relatives who don't have
Blu-Ray players. You just have to make sure to set the camcorder 's
analog (composite) output to 480i so that it formats the picture in the
right aspect ratio, or else the 16:9 image will be squeezed to 4:3
instead of letterboxed.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
Will the DW-100 DVD burner work with the HG-20 camcorder
Yes.
I recently purchased the DW-100 for my HG-20. Works like a charm.
Some quick gotchas though...
People complain that Canon was not 100% clear about it's use. You can only burn standard definition (i.e. "non" hi def) DVDs if that's how the camera recorded it... I never looked to see if my HG-20 is capable of the old stuff, but basically the camera is sending data to the burner and there's no real conversion going on. Some Canon models record in Standard Def others do not.
Personally, I use the burner to backup videos onto standard DVD-R (or DVD-R DL) discs. The discs are burned in a Blu-ray compatible format. (but you get 4.7 or 8GB onto a disc vs the 30GB you'd get on a Blu-ray disc - but don't complain b/c the Blu-ray discs cost a fortune.)
If you don't own a Blu-Ray player you can connect the USB b/w the "camera & burner", and then the HDMI b/w the "camera & TV" and send the video from the burner, thru the camera, and watch on a Hi Def TV. (Complex but it does work and the picture quality is great).
Hop this helps.

Cannot read disc
Hello,
There are a couple of things you can try here. First, try a different disc. If it reads another disc then it's likely the disc you are using. It could be scratched, it could be cracked, or the disc software could be failing to load. You may need to load it manually from Start > My Computer.
If it's not reading anything, try reinstalling the drivers from the Canon website. Failing that, it's likely a hardware problem. You can try cleaning the lens inside of the device or send it into Canon for repairs.
I am thinking of buying
Connect the camera to your PC.
Connect the Canon burner to your PC.
Use free software (see:
http://www.MajorGeeks.com and search for "AShampoo Burning 6")
to read the files from your camera, and burn them to a blank CD/DVD disk.

This could be happening for a number of reasons, and one of them could be a slightly compromised laser lens. It could need to be cleaned, or, if it's been through heavy usage, it might need a slight adjustment. Otherwise, there could be some software/hardware random conflicts, which you pretty much have to live with.
There are a number of issues that can occur with dvd recorders, and media is a critical issues, and all dvd/w or r/w media is not compatible with all players. If you've changed the brand of you media, that might be an issue.
Good luck, and hope this helps.
Cannon DVD Burner DW100
I had this problem also when trying to connect to my HF200. I found a solution. The DVD recorder does not like MXP recordings, in fact it hates them. You will have to make sure no MXP recordings are present on your SD card/Hard drive. Then any recordings you make with the intension of recording to DVD need to be made in FXP mode or below. But remember if you have a selection of recordings on your SD/HD and just one is in MXP mode, you will get the error 'Operation cancelled'.
Just as a sidenote, I phoned canon support about this problem, they were useless, promised me a callback that I never got!
I have a new Legria HFS 21 with dvd-burner version
Hello,
The problem could be that the lens of your device is dirty or weak, i will advice you get a lens cleaner to cleaner the lens of your device, if after cleaning, the problem still persist, you will need to replace the lens of your device because it can no longer read disc.
Also, the disc you insert could be bad, try use another disc, if it is same problem, clean or replace the lens as advice earlier.
Take care.
The Burner does not read the discs.
try a firmware update and then if it still dosnt see the disc make sure if its old to check inside to see if the laser maybe out of set. and or a bad diode laser.

Some video formats will not be able to play to a certain DVD if the DVD player does not support it. Hope this could help you..Please don't forget to rate me..:-) Thanks..
