An overflow can occur when using certain brands of coffee that are finer ground or using a water softener, bottled water, reverse osmosis, or filtered water. If you will call Bunn Customer Service, you can get a flow restrictor sprayhead which will eliminate this issue.

Most likely the problem is in the water intake area. I have the same problem, I took my machine apart, removing the top revealed a plastic water chamber which leads to a connector that lets the water go into the heating chamber. The seal had become brittle, and the plastic water chamber also was degenerating where it met the heated water chamber. I replaced the rubber seal and that worked the first time, however, I think the plastic has now deteriorated to the point that I will need a new reservoir piece and a new seal. It's probably time to send in the unit for repair.
I think one repair for a 25-30 year old coffee maker sin't such a bad deal!

Bunn's official position is that this brewer must be hooked up to a water line. The problem with using these as a pourover is the evaporation of the water. it doesn't take much of a loss of water to burn out the element in those models.

Are you using the original Bunn pot (carafe) or a replacement ?

At the bottom of the filter basket, there's a little lever that closes off the coffee flow when you remove the coffee pot. The idea is that you can pour a cup early, before the full pot is brewed, and it won't spill coffee all over the hotplate.

The original coffee pot fits right against this little lever, but if you have a replacement that's not the right size/shape, it won't reach the lever.

I work for BUNN. Has your issue been resolved? The rocker arm is inside the pour in bowl (where you pour in the water for brewing). To get to it you have to take off the entire top lid (not just the spin lid above the pouring area). That can be removed by lifting it up and then you simply snap it back on when you are finished. Hope this helps.

It is most likely time to decalcify the machine. If you haven't made a regular practice of this, a cocoon of mineral deposits has encased the heating element causing it to struggle to warm the water adequately even as it overheats itself. If one or more decalcifications using white vinegar and the instructions in your owner's guide fail to improve the situation, the thermostat may be faulty. Contact BUNN for toll-free support:

2 cups white vinegar in reservoir, run full cycle, let cool, discard vinegar. Fill reservoir with cold water, run full cycle, discard water, let cool. Repeat clear water cycle.
