you should have a red light and if its on it should be working. I would just go on Amazon and buy a AV connector for the system, no need to use RF like its 1989 :)
I am guessing that the video cable is not comparable with your Sega Genesis console and that you need a video cable that is comparable with your Sega Genesis console.
There's a couple ways to hook it to a hdtv...you can use the original one that hooks up with cable wire ..just connect to cable connection on back of tv...switch to channel 3 or 4 on tv...or get the better a/v connecters connect to rca jacks...goodluck

Recently I was challenged by fellow YouTuber Daz, cojonesdeloro, to rescue his badly damaged Japanese SEGA Mega Drive. To add to the problems, his console was also what is sometimes referred to as an Asian PAL Mega Drive. Basically an originally Japanese console which has been "converted" (butchered
Well the controller might be broken then and try using another controller if still no luck this has happened once before to me the contollers were find but I had tried to solder the control port for player 2 and it had worked after that it could just be that issue then with needing to be resoldered. Sometimes the controller ports can become a little loose do to old age and usage.
The button cell battery is dead. You can replace them but you will have to solder them in. If you decide to do so dont heat the battery up to much for it may explode. If you have a friend that knows how to solder ask them for help.
C'mon, this is a 90's system- blow in it- everyone knows that. Seriously, put some rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip, and lean both sides of the contacts that go into the console. That should help.
It might be dead. I used to have two of them I got from a relative as well and one of them did the same thing. The inside might just be fried (they're old consoles). You could take it to a repair place if you really wanted to but it may cost more money to have it looked at than the system is worth as a whole.
i have a similar problem with my magadrive , runs ok for about 15 minutes then seems to lose the a/v signal , i think something is over heating on my machine ,if i find a solution ill get back to your post
