On my smartdisk firelite the conection that
you can open the case and remove the hard drive and install it in a new external usb case for it.
you can find out what type of case you need after you open it. it could be either a SATA connection or IDE.
If it is a SATA and you got a SATA cable/power you could also just install it directly into your computer and grab the files you need.

External smartdisk firelite
It seems that you will lose your files. These file already
infected with virus, and corrupted it. There's no other
way but to reformat your smartdisk.

My computer recognizes this hard drive, but windows media player does not
With Windows Media Player open, hit the F3 key. You get an Add To Library window providing you with an option to sync folders from other sources...like an external hard drive.
Select the option to add My folders and those of others I can access. Then you click the Add button.
Now you can see the Add Folder window. Search for the folder where you stored your music on the external hard drive and select it. Then click the OK button.
This will add the selected folder on the external hard drive to the list of synced folders. Once the Add Folder window disappears, Windows Media Player starts syncing the music and adding it to it's library.

smart disk or any external HDD, or SSD, all need to be formatted
first. you did only the last step. (first)
#1 plug in the USB cable to a working USB port.
2: go to CP control panel then admin tools then computer management and last disk management or.
2b: in the run box type
diskmgmt.msc
3: now diskmanagment is OPEN.
4: the drive shows up as a DISK NUMBER. only
5: right click your DISK seen in the list, do not pick Disk 0
6: make sure the DISK U picked size matches your external disk size.~~
7: right click the DISK1 or what it is and pick new simple volume
8: right click disk1 and format it. to fat 32 or NTFS.
9: assign a drive letter to the new drive, (from now on the drive external shows up in windows explorer as drive letter same.
that is it, same story on new empty USB thumb drive !
