Send a signal from the mixer to the amp directly, seems as if you have a distorted signal from your crossover

The balanced line input will be used for long runs to eliminate noise. it is low impedance.the high impedance line (unbalanced) is ok for sort runs such as in a rack. if you were say running output from a mixer 50' away you want to use the balaced output on the board and the balanced input on the amp.

Pressing & holding the prev/up & next/down buttons at the same time will toggle the lock on or off.

Turn the volume down? Feed it cleaner source material?

You don't say under what conditions you're blowing them or if any of the informative indicators are warning you of impending doom. The Samson is capable of cooking just about any home speaker.

The following conditions will cause the Protection LED to go on:

• Initial power-up: For approximately five seconds after initial power-up, the

protection circuitry is activated and the speaker output is muted. If everything is

operating normally, you will hear an audible click at the conclusion of this brief

period, as the protection circuitry is deactivated and the S1500 / S2000 begins

delivering signal to connected speakers (at which point you'll hear a click). It is

normal for the Protection LED to fade gradually after the amplifier is powered off.

• Overheating: A temperature sensing device in the S1500 / S2000 will cause

the protection circuitry to be activated (and the Protection LED to go on)

whenever the operating temperature of the unit rises above a safe level. To

guard against this problem, make sure the S1500 / S2000 receives adequate

ventilation on all sides and that both the front and rear panels are unobstructed.

• Severe overcurrent conditions: This occurs whenever the signal being input to

the S1500 / S2000 rises to a level above 20% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion).

• Shorted speaker cables: This will occur if, due to faulty wiring, the hot and

ground signals being output by the S1500 / S2000 short one another.

• Output impedance drops below 2 ohms: This can occur if the S1500 / S2000

is connected to inappropriate speaker systems (see the "Setting Up and Using

Your S1500 / S2000" section on page 5 in this manual for more information).

• DC voltage detected at speaker output: The most likely cause of this is an

internal failure.

In general, any time the Protection LED lights up (other than during the

approximately five seconds following initial power-up), there is reason to be

concerned. If this occurs, turn the S1500 / S2000 off immediately and carefully

check all wiring and external devices in order to locate and correct the condition

that caused the LED to light up in the first place.

A loose wire or bad solder connection.

The XTI 2k has lots of DSP options built into the front panel. If it's your intent to run the amp in bridge mono for subs be sure than you have all settings set correct for the DSP, it's very possible that channel 2 will render in-active.

This also applies in the case if you wanted to run your subs in stereo and the internal settings are set for bridged mono.

Another possibility would be if the DSP was set with a crossover. If you put a cross-over point (Low Pass Filter) on the high side of the sub, if becomes the High Pass Filter of Channel 2. Audio would pass if there was no other filter sets, but would not if you were using a crossover and then hitting the subs.

From your description, I would suspect some poor solder connections inside. If you know how to work on these, check for bad connections near the voltage regulators. That is the mode common area.

It sounds more like you are overdriving the speakers not clipping the amp. If the output rating for the amp is 1000W into 4 ohms, this is approximately 500W into an 8 ohm load. Your speakers are rated for 400W. If you are running the amp at full output, that is too much power for the speakers and either the speakers are warming up too much and failing or are being extruded too far and failing. Your best bet is to better match the amp/speaker setup. Crown amps have built in clipping indicators and I believe that the xti series also has a compression circuit that would prevent distortion on the output side.

To confirm my suspicions, in what manner are the speakers failing? Are they completely open or do they sound distorted?

The amplifier is going into protection. This may be caused by problems with speakers or wiring, or there may be internal problems in the amplifier. Start by connecting a known good speaker with a few feet of wire, and see if it runs without shutting down. If so, check the wiring and speakers. If the problem continues, the amp should be serviced.

This is most likely to be a heat issue where the amps overheat and shut themselves off then cool down and turn back on. Please check that the amps have proper ventilation and that any air ducts are clean.

The protection circuit is most likely shutting down the amp because of heat. When the amp shuts down, does it feel hot? If not, then further investigation into the protection circuit will be necessary. This is not a problem that is likely to be diagnosed remotely as measurements will be required internally once the amp has stopped working. Check the sepaker wires for shorts that will cause the amp to work extra hard (generating extra heat). Other than that, you will need a servicer to diagnose further.

I would study the service manual and service notes to find out why the temperature sensors do not work. Probably a supply rail down I would think to affect both of them.
