In a last ditch effort, I took out the batteries, re-inserted them, and lo and behold, it worked. Don't ask me why . . .

Have you tried holding the menu button down for about ten seconds? Make sure the hold button is not on.

Most probably output capacitor need replacement.

Hi Jerry What Model....? Using a mobile phone camera would have helped in this situation. Before taking things apart I'll be very surprised if someone has the same speaker system in bits somewhere An electronics guy would trace the wire back to it's source to decide what it's being used for.
