For the virtual memory follow these instructions:Right click on My Computerselect properties.

On this screen select AdvancedClick the Settings button in the Performance section

Click the Advanced tab on the Performance Options screenClick the change button

On the Virtual Memory screen, check if it is set to System Managed size

If so select custom and increase the size from what it is currently

For example if it is set to 512MB set it to 1024MBIf it is set to custom try setting it to System managed size

You will need to reboot after making the change

Was it working before with the same computer ? Try with a PC is you can, maybe the drive was has filesystem that mac cannot see by default (like NTFS).

disconnect your WD ext HDD. and reboot your computer. then connect again. if still not showing. go to device manager (right click my computer then properties -- click device manager). expand by clickin "Disk drives" category here it will show all the hard drives installed in your computer including your WD ext HDD . if you see yellow sign on your external drive right click and remove then go to Action menu click on Scan for hardware. it should detect and install the driver again. if still the same or maybe its not on the list of Disk drives.. try to change another USB cable .. i hope this will help

Sounds like either the power cord for it went bad or the drive died.

if you are referring to a usb drive

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems to a computer and its parts you might have restore it to its defaults

Right click on usb drive select properties you will have an array of options

Select the hardware option then select your drive properties policies

Right click on your drive select properties then on customize restore Default in W 7 click start control panel scroll to folder options view place a tick in show hidden files folders and drivesthis may vary depending on your operating system

The external drive is going bad. Better get all you need off of it cuz it's going to croak soon and you won't be able to get anything.

The electronics in the hard drive is damaged and cannot be repaired by us mortals. There are companies that can recover data from damaged hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

DON'T PANIC!

The drive may have lost the index or suffered some minor curruption. As it is showing an appropriate amount of space the data is most likely still there.

First and foremost, turn it off and don't use it for anything as any files you copy onto it now could overwrite the missing data. Once you have done that, comment back here with your location(country, state, city).

Once you do that I can refer you to a nearby Data Recovery facility to have your files retrieved.
