"I get an error "Error in the back shading motor (4431) and the scanner stops. How can I fix it?

This error can be caused by a mechanical problem during the return of the shade. After many attempts, problem was fixed cutting both springs from pressure roll behind reading unit. The amount of spring removed changed from machine to machine. I cut 1 quarter of turn from spring and test the scanner. Procedure was repeated until problem was fixed. In worst scenario 2 turns were cutted. Be aware that cutting these springs will affect the scanned image quality.

Canon DR-5010C Scanner How to get rid of the 4 zero's at the end of the naming convention?

The 4 zeroes at the end are added on purpose. If you are scanning a set of documents, say 11 pages, to maintain the sequence the scanner scans them as abcd0001, abcd0002 till abcd 0011. Without 4 zeroes, the first file will be abcd1, abcd2....abcd10, abcd11. Now in the Computer the sequence will be abcd1, abcd10, abcd11, abcd2 till abcd9, altering the sequence. If you are scanning into PDF, the scanned images will be added automatically maintaining sequence. S. Mohan, India

I have a big black line down the middle of my scans

If dirt sticks to the scan module, it will be scanned continuously and appear as a line in the output. Clean the glass with Isopropyl Alcohol. Dont use any other solvent. S. Mohan, India

How to have white background on small documents

All areas outside of the document will be black only. I don't know how you were getting white background. If you want white background around your scanned image, a) stick the check (in this example) onto a white paper and scan the whole sheet. Ensure double detection is off. b) You can also do this in software, by cropping a larger area outside the scanned image. There are many options to view the scanned image like Actual size or Fit or Fit vertically or Fit width. The same image will appear different in each case. S. Mohan, India

5010C scanner won't skip blank pages

We had this problem and discovered it was caused by a small piece on the glass. Once the glass was cleaned, the blank pages were skipped.

THERE IS A LINE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCANNED

Look at the glass strip through which the documents are scanned. Even a tiny spot there results in a dark line along the scanned image. Often such spots come from scanning a document with corrections made using the white correction fluid :)
The users manual (UM) describes the cleaning procedure on pages 61-62, you can get the manual here:

Our Canon DR-5010C machines keep

Sounds like you have a lot of miles on them. Probably not designed for the heavy usage you guys do. You could clean or replace the feed rollers, but I would not spend too much on them.

Probably better to upgrade with new. Maybe a 7550 or a 7510 if you need a flat glass. The new ones will be faster than the old ones, you may only need 3 or 4 to replace the 10 depending on the locations need. I have a 7550, and it's very fast. Scans both sides in one pass. Just _no flat glass !
Had a 7510 before. Had flat glass, but slower. I update at least every 3 years. (And use it a lot less than you) Youve had these for 'years'? Time to say bye. donate them and get a write off. Start with one new one. See if you like it.

If they are as worn as I suspect, they will cost more to repair than they are worth, by time you count the repair guys time too.

I need the driver of

If this is a problem with W 7 , it could be that there are no drivers running under Windows Seven for this unit.
If you have the W XP install disc , you could install a virtual version of W XP on your HDD (
http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/desktop_downloads/vmware_player/3_0 )
You could also partition your HDD (
http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html ) and install W XP on the new one .
Otherwise , you will have to buy a new scanner .
Regards .

Auto detection can not be set as default

A 'Driver' is only the software portion to connect two hardwares. You need to install a printer driver for Printer, or a DVD driver for a DVD drive. Similarly, the scanner driver just connects the scanner to the computer.
You need to use a Scanning software to use the scanner. Canon offers CapturePerfect 3, using which you scan documents, do rotation, convert to PDF etc. CP3 has option to detect the page size. CP2 is available free of cost from Canon sites. CP3 comes with the scanner.

Canon DR-5010C when settings are changed to Auto

If you are using CapturePerfect 3, select page size as Auto-detection, detect size by Image width, Deskew by roller & Image, then you will get images exactly as that of the scanned image.
If you ae using CP2, then you can select Auto-detection AND page detection. The problem with CP2 is if the image is less than that of the guide-plate, you will get black background. You can clean this through software.
If you had select B&W scanning and chosen to save file in JPG format, the scanner will report error. JPG is only for Color/ Grey scale.
With CP2, I have observed that sometimes, the changes are not retained, unless you select 'default' first and alter the parameters. This is not found in CP3.

AUto Detection bad parameter issue

If this is a hardware issue, the unit will have to be serviced. If it's a software problem, you could try uninstalling the CD, then reinstalling it to see if it clears up this issue.
Couldn't find anyone reporting this problem on the net, but perhaps Canon might have a heads up on it. Contact them at their support site:
http://usa.canon.com/cusa/about_canon/standard_display/contact_us
Good luck, and hope this helps.

I just changed the rollers in my Canon Dr-5010c

Try 'page-counting', if this works, the scanner is okay. Fan the documents and loosen them, ensure the end touching the roller is crisp and not bent/folded. You can also try a different set of documents to eliminate paper related problem.

Always have to rotate to 270 is this normal. I

The Canon 5010/5020/9080c/7580C etd are duplex scanner (can scan both sides in one go). If you select simplex i.e., only top side, you will get the image straight, unless you have changed the settings in the scanning software. I am assuming you are using CapturePerfect software. Please switch off the rotate option in Capture perfect and the scanner output will be as you see it.

Parts of page being scanned are cut off

Whcih version of CapturePerfect you are using?
I use ver 2.0. In the settings page select scanners maximum. In the 'advanced' select auto detection. Then whatever size of the paper guides you choose, that will will be the width and ofcourse the length is automatic. There is a sensor under the paper guide, and it detects the paper width. Any rotation chosen will be after scanning the required size.

Canon DR-5010c feed roller does not stop running after documents

Please blow air and clean the sensors. There could be a small piece if paper causing this. The scanner must be assuming that there is paper.
