Dvd on laptop keeps sticking
What do you mean by sticking? What happens when you play a dvd? Do you mean it keeps stalling and freezing for a while as it buffers more content to show? Do you mean the drawer where you put the dvd into the computer is hard to open?

My hp pavillion dv7-3079wm shuts off after startup
If you saw that kind of damage, the temperature rose to critical levels in the processor ic causing thermal runner way. Remove the old thermal grease with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel, clean the processor until spotless and the heatsink that mates with it, use high grade thermal grease for computers and a apply a thin coat to both pieces and assemble, make sure any dust or dirt is removed and not blocking vents, compressed air is great for this. If you are very lucky the chip has remained intact, processors are very robust.
WHY IS IT THAT MY HP PAVILION dv2404 does not boot
this problem is caused by our drives starting before your main hard drive so all you need to do is enter the f8 button then you get a reading of the computer you need to go across and click a link to show what drives you are running here you can change the order of what is to be read first this should fix our problem. The link on the restart command might have an error which is strange but you can create an restart icon to click on with you wanted

No brightness visible on screen, but positioning
Hello,
try pressing Fn + F8 to increase the screen brightness and Fn + F7 to reduce brightness.
If this does not make any difference, then it means your screen bulb is dead and needs replacement.
Once you replace your screen bulb, your screen will brighten up again.
Good luck.

HP will not cover the repair if guaranty is expired.
Video card on your laptop is integrated on motherboard, and the repairman must replace the whole motherboard to fix it.
I quote : "Only half the screen works the rest is justa grey colouring." that is more likely a problem with the ribbon cable, connecting LCD, or with LCD screen itself, in some case , as said by the repairman , it can be the video card.
if the repairman did not open and inspected the laptop LCD display , connector and cables, then the problem it is probably the ribbon cable or the LCD panel.
The technician mentioned the motherboard, because that is the most expensive repair service, so that he can cover his back.
Ask a quote to a different technician, see if this can give you different quotes for all possible faults.
The possibilities are:
1 Replace ribbon cable
2 Replace LCD display
3 Replace motherboard.
Nvidia 8600m graphics card repairable
Graphics cards on laptops are part of the motherboard and cannot be replaced and near impossible to repair.
The graphic card uses shared RAM, it uses part of the RAM module/s and if the RAM is faulty, it could affect the graphics card. I suggest you re-seat the RAM module/s to see if it fixes the problem, if not take the RAM to your friendly computer store or repair center and get them to test the RAM for you.
If the RAM is OK then you have a motherboard problem and a replacement motherboard may not be a cost effective solution.
But you could remove the hard disk and put it into a USB hard disk adapter case and use it as an USB external hard drive.
