I've just bought a 250GB

Hi,

Even though it is possible that your USB hard drive is corrupt, but

before you finally conclude, try out these few troubleshooting

steps.

First of all, it is possible that the USB port that you are using is a

USB 1.0 port, which has a lower voltage not enough to

power on your Storage drive.

In this case, there are two things you can do,

1. Change the USB port you are using for the storage drive to a

USB 2.0 one (Just keep Checking all the ports one by one in case

you dont know which one it is).

2. If your Storage drive has external power facility, just plug it in

an external power first, before connecting it to the system.

If there are no USB 2.0 Ports on your system at all,

then just go to any electronic store and tell them you want to buy

a USB 2.0 Expansion card.

and if it is a laptop, A USB 2.0 PCMCIA card.

Install it on your system, and connect your external drive through it.

Meanwhile, before you try out the second option, test the drive on

a friend's system, that you are sure has a very good system, with

USB 2.0 port.

If after trying out all these, the USB Drive still doesn't work, then

I'm afraid, the drive might have been bad/spoilt.

Kindly keep me posted about the problem and let me know how it

goes

Hope this helps you out.

Thank you for using Fixya

Hi, When ever I try and

If your usb hard drive is upto 500gb thenit don't require external power but if it is more than 500gb then it require external power.
And try to format the whole drive and recreate the partition on the hard drive. This will solve your problem.

Ok this TB external is

I'm sorry to say but based on your statement, the HD is starting to quit working. Try the following first:

1. Try connecting the external HD into another computer. And if the other computer can detect the HD, immediately back the files up.

2. After backing up the files, reformat your HD and reconnect it to the computer that you are having a problem with.

But if you are hearing a clicking sound while the external HD is ON, I'm sorry but the HD is no longer functioning. The clicking sound is also called the "Click of Death" for hard drives.

Have a great day!

My computer won't recognize external harddrive anymore

One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.
7. It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure.

8. If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

9. If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
10. ensure that you have set removable drives for "quick removal" or that you use the "Safly Remove Hardware" option often shown on the lower toolbar. It is possible that files my not be fully written to external devices before they are removed. This corrupts the file itself and even on occasion the drive.
SPECIAL NOTES
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"
Hope this gives you the information you need

Verbatim 160GB Hard Drive won't boot.

Try it on another PC or on a powered USB hub: maybe it's not getting enough power to run.

If it still doesn't work, and you don't hear the drive's spin-up noise, the electronics may be damaged, the internal disk disconnected or the internal power connection faulty.

If you hear the spin-up whirring and then a series of repeated whirrs and clacks, ending after about 30 seconds - one minute, the disk might be damaged. It still might be recoverable if extracted from the case and connected directly to an appropriate hard disk port (a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter might be necessary), but when things go this far, the chances aren't too good.

  • Next check the hardware in My Computer > Device Manager if there are "yellow marks" for devices that require driver software to be installed.
When devices e.g. printer is connected before you installed the needed software, it can happen that the USB port is no longer recognized.
Then remove the device that shows having problems in the hardware manager.
Next install the software.
Connect afterwards or at the time the computer asks to do so.

Strange noises from external hard drive and won't

Is your hard drive in a vertical position? If not, turn your PC off, secure the hard drive into its housing, making sure that it is not touching anything underneath. Restart the computer

If it is still noisy and not reading, the platters inside have become damaged. You will have to replace your drive.

Verbatim Portable hard drive ? download entire desktop with applications ?

Don't know why you might want to do this, but assuming the portable drive is equal to or bigger than your system drive (C:), I would recommend you check out Ghost software (not sure of name) but this will put you on it. With Ghost, you make a mirror image of an entire hard drive. I used it to make multiple copies of entire PC's for classroom use.. i.e. Load one PC with all the OS and program software, and then connect other drives to the "Master" one at a time, until I had a classroom full of identical systems. Had to pull the drives, but since yours is already external, connectivity would be the only issue. USB should work, I would think.

My Employer Says They Are Going To Cut My Wages. Can They?

If you are in the middle of a contract, then cutting your wages is almost certainly a violation of your employment law rights. While I am by no means an expert on this matter, I did have a similar issue years ago - mid-contract wage cuts - and I hired anemployment attorney to fight the case on my behalf. It turned out that my employer was basically looking to scare people into taking the wage cut. They got into some pretty serious legal trouble for their transgression, and nothing happened to me in terms of wage cuts after that. If you are between contracts, your employer can re-negotiate your salary, but as far as I am aware, if you are in an agreed-upon contract, they cannot just decide to reduce your salary. If you want to settle matters, contest this action with support from a legal professional.
