Won't recognize on windows XP(SP3)

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover your files.http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

Formatted hard disk on pc now it won't run on mac

Try plugging your hard drive into your mac, open "Disk Utility" select your hard drive in the list on the side, Click RAID, change the Volume Format to MS-DOS (FAT), and it should work.
Hope this helps!

Need to know what AC adapter to use with my Firelite. Have a number of AC adapters but not sure which one goes with my unit

First ..this is an usb disk ..and usually it does not need an external power supply but in special cases when it is plugged in something it can not sustain it ..i understood it does have a power supply plug ..but ..I repeat ..it should work on the usb alone ..and get the power from it ..If you experience some issues and need to know if ti will work when you power it external ..the values are written on the back of teh drive ..or near the plug ..You will only need to have the right jack ..and the voltage to match ..beware of any higher voltage ..it may damage it right the way ..

I have a Smartdisk Firelite

Thanks for the Fixya Support Call today

My examination over the phone concluded that you unplugged this unit without using the Saftly unplug incon on the taskbar witch can cause data loss, unit not to respond, or a bricked unit,

You solution today if the drive is not presenting the "click of death" take the unit out of the external case, purchase a new sata external case to usb port. You will install this into the new case.

Now if that does not prove satisifaction I would purchase if I where you Spinright www.grc.com for $90 bucks, hook the unit to a pc desktop then run the program witch will try and recover the data off the failing drive.

If the solution proves satisfaction I would still warn you to remove the data to a safer souce before failure starts to present itself.

Hard drives last on adverage 1.5 to 2.0 years before they start to fail. I would also advice a 3 step backup plan.

1. External Hard drive or DVD's
2. Cloud backup service www.carbonite.com
3. Offsite backup with cd's or other hard drive units in a safe deposit box.

Thanks for using fixya.com I hope this call is satifactory to you.

Kind Regards,

MY COMPUTER DIED. HOW DO I TRANSFER THE FILES

It depends on how you copied your files to the SmartDisk.
If you used the "normal" method of copying files/folders in Windows, then just connect it to the new computer.
If you used some "backup" software from Verbatim to write "backup" files,
then you'll need to install that software on the new computer,
in order to retrieve from those "backup" images.

MY Apple computer all of a sudden is not

Try going to utilities in the applications folder, in utilities select disk utility and see if the drive shows up, if so select repair disk after selecting the SmartDisk. If not showing select your hard drive and run repair permissions and see if it helps. Failing this you need a 3rd party disk repair solution like DiskWarrior. The information is still there!

Cannot see USB Drive - windows 7

Is it detected or not? if so,
Tip 1. Go to Computer Management (Right click on the My Computer - Manage - Disk Management) and right click on the drive, change the Drive Letter, click Ok and restart your Pc.
Tip 2. You can also try this, Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive Right mouse click on My Computer Left click on Manage Left click on Device Manager Expand the USB list Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description) Right mouse click - Uninstall Turn off the external USB hard drive Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver (windows will automatically if it doesn't come with the package)
Tip 3. Start -> Computer -> Organize -> Folder and search options -> click View tab -> uncheck "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" -> OK.

If after trying all these measures, the problem still persists then let me know once again. I will post you another method. I can't write down everything here, since you haven't mentioned the exact problem, so I would like to request you to please let me know the exact problem so that i can help you better. Did you connect it after while the system is running or did you connect it to the pc before it is booted?.
