How do you delete old
You should be able to view the drive contents in Windows just like any other drive. Change your View to show Details of the files and locate the back up files then delete all but the most current back up by selecting the file and then pressing the delete key.
I have a Simple Tech (simple Drive) 320GB external
Try connecting the drive to a different computer, to see if your computer is the problem.
If necessary, open the external case, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some computer, to see if the disk-drive itself still can be accessed.
If not, and you have "important" data on the disk-drive, search the Internet for a professional "Data Recovery Service" -- you ship your disk-drive to them, pay them a lot of money, and they repair the disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a brand-new disk-drive.
The computer no longer sees my 320 gb hard drive,
Possibilities:
1. dead USB port on your computer -- try another port
2. try a different USB cable
3. try your external drive on some other computer, to see if it works at all
4. open the casing, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive, thus bypassing that adapter, to see if the adapter has failed, or if the disk-drive itself has failed
5. Google-search for a commercial "data recovery service" -- such companies can disassemble your disk-drive, and fix it, just long-enough to copy all your photos/music onto a brand-new disk-drive.

Hello,
Try to go through disk management and see if it works?
Open control panel then select administrative tools then disk management. Then in left column click disk management.
If you locate it may be it must be initialise by the system or need to create partition by formatting.
You can also check all the cables , the power cables the adapter , try to change the Usb cable also..
ok
Good luck !!
I have a 320GB SimpleDrive USB 2.0 External Hard
One or more of the hints below will probably sort out most USB problems with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.
1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port
6. For FLASH DRIVES you should ensure that the device is set for "quick removal" using the drive control panel properties or use the USB "Safely Remove Hardware" option. If you dont do this there is a very strong chance that any files you transfer may not be there when you plug into another computer.
7. It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
You should also do this to cheack the drives connections are not bad inside the enclosure.
8. If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.
9. If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
SPECIAL NOTES
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.
USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.
Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"
External HDD is not detected
check the Hdd on a another usb slots uninstall and reinstall the drivers and also check the usb compatibilty if it is 2.0 or not
My 320 GB usb drive is no longer recognized by my computer.
Very simple solution. Your external storage cabinet for the drive is junk. I opened mine up and its just fitting loosely in it. You will void your warranty if you do - but who cares, the cost to send it in for an RMA is equal to the cost for a 2.5" SATA enclosure. When you open it up, the SATA and Power connector is not all the way in - push it in and then tape it so it holds together. Plug it in and you should be fine. Fixed two of them that way.
My cisnet computer keep reading disk errors.i
u need to format using a windows 98 sec boot disc. place the floppy in to the comp. switch on the comp. let the disc run, making sure your bios is set to boot floppy first. when disc is finished setting type fdisk then when finished delete drive by pressing 4 .add drive when finished by pressing 1 and following the insturctions. when finished press crtl+alt+del let the comp, reboot the when the disk as finished loading type format c: press yes let it run press crtl +alt+del again then take out floppy disc and put in winpx . as this sounds like you have a virus in your registery
Hangs on large installations or data transfer
THat means that there is something wrong with the drive already. I can transfer up to 100 Gig of a single file to large USB drives so generally transferring is not a problem. Try formatting the drive then transfer again. Or your USB port on your computer is only a USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0
Cannot use the device
go to the manufactures page and install the drivers also u can go to emashine site and try to update your usb drivers or try diffrent usb hole
MISSING STORAGE SPACE
HARD DRIVE NEVER SHOWS TOTAL.ITS BECAUSE OF A CONFLICT CONCERNING WHAT SOME SAY IS A GB. ITS NORMAL AND YOUR DRIVE FINE.RELAX AND ENJOY.RICHARDM69

It has to do with the way computers count. Computers count in binary where we count in decimal.
Hard drive makers list there drives capacities in the decimal format, where windows lists it in it's binary format.
Wikipedia has a good explanation.
Also, the drive may have some preinstalled software on it that could be taking up a bit of space (it's usually not much).
My external drive will not open on my new HP computer
Unplug the external. Then Try rebooting cold. When the computer stops +30 sec. Reboot the computer and plug the external when you see the HP splash screen.
- If that does not work, make sure you have the drivers for the ext. for your configuration. Win 8, 8.1?
- You can go to the site where your external was developed at and make sure you have latest drivers and if there is a problem associated with your device.
- On newer machines there is also 3.0 USB connections. While it should not make any major difference, make sure that your ext. is not plugged into a 3.0 USB. The 3.0 USB is blue in color.
