I have been using this hard drive with this

Best solution would be to try it on another computer & if it works there use the windows check disk tool (& maybe the defragmenter) to correct this problem. OR you could transfer the data onto another hard disk, format this one keeping 2-4 partitions and reload your data.

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

My new Iomega 1 TB

Like a needle on a record-player, moving over the tracks of a vinyl record,
the disk-drive has a moving read/write head.

Try defragmenting the disk-drive -- this tends to reduce the average distance that the head moves, and decreases the noise-level.

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

> it's working fine

The message is misleading -- it only means that the device is getting electrical power, and its "plug-and-play" information has been matched to a device that Windows knows how to support.

Connect it to a different computer, to see if it can be detected.
If not, then exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

My hard drive doesnt turn

Check the power adapter to verify it's working by using a volt meter. If using 115 VAC check inside the unit for a blown fuse.

Can you password protect an iomega select desktop

You could format the drive using NTFS and assign permissions to files and folders stored on it. This basic protection will deter most people but can be easily bypassed. Ensure you save any data on the disk before you format as it will be lost.

If you need to secure the data please have a look at http://www.truecrypt.org/

Hope this helps

My hard disk is not

the problem could be from one of 3 places, one being the drive. this is very unlikely except if it has not fallen or dropped then it should be fine.
second could be your usb cord, since it is glowing then there is power going in but maybe not enough. so try a different cable
lastly it could be from your usb port, it might be a hardware fault or maybe it has being deactivated. try using it on another pc

Try this :
Delete the UpperFilters registry value and the LowerFilters registry value. These values may cause access problems. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the UpperFilters registry value. This value is located in the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

    Note If you receive an error when you try to delete the registry subkey, you may not have appropriate permissions to edit the subkey. Have you tryed chkdsk in the command prompt, goto command prompt and type CHKDSK F: /F and press enter, this is a tool that checks your drives for any errors and hopfully should resolve any problems, rather than formating it and loosing everything on the drive.
Also have you tryed setting up the usb for mass storage in the bios somtimes there is a setting for this in the bios, or try setiing it back to factory defaults and see if that works.
The only other option would be to update your usb 2.0 driver in device manager in the properties of my computer icon on the desktop. hope this helps in some way and post back what happens.
