My iomega external hard drive just beeps when ever

ummm, i fixed my problem i had with a iomega 500gb external hard drive, it was beeping at me also, so what i did was i knocked it on its side, switched it off, by its own panel, then switched it back on, it came back into life and was recognised again!!

so try it with yours!

I think what what happens is, when you accidentally drop it, or knock it from time time(accidentally), the needle inside the hard drive goes out of place, and the hard drive will beep, or something to that effect. knocking the case itself again, might fix the problem, or maybe not, thats if the hard drive itself is more severely/inherentally faulty.

71 years old, would like a step by step procedure

Hi

Transferring file from your computer to external hard drive is very easy, just copy and paste all the files you needed to the external hard drive.

Reinstalling Windows XP would be quite difficult. Make sure you have Windows XP installer CD and all the utility hardware driver of your computer e.g. Chipset driver, Sound driver, VGA driver, WAN driver, LAN driver and others. If you do not have the Utility drivers, just download the complete set of utility driver in the internet. Most of them are free to downloads.

Here is the procedure with video on how to reinstall the Windows XP operating system (step by step) http://www.fixya.com/support/r7410371-reinstall_windows_xp_or_installing_clean

Please rate and make a comment if you find this solution very helpful and might help others as well. Post more comments if you need more help.

Regards and thank you for using Fixya !

Hi I have an apple

Portable devices such as USB disks (in most UNIX based operating systems) will be mounted as READ-ONLY. Remember the old floppy disk with a slide switch to make them READ-WRITE? same principal.
Try right clicking (MAC uses double finger click together) on the Desktop Icon that appears after you plug in the USB drive... is there an option to select READ-WRITE?
let us know if that was it.

How do I get a users manual to learn how to fully

According the the website, the manual is on the drive. To get to it all you need to do is first plug power into the hard drive. Then plug the USB cable from the hard drive into the computer you are using. Then go into My Computer and select the drive. You should see the manual there. If you cannot read the file download this and install this: http://get.adobe.com/reader/. It is a pdf reader which is what the manual file is going to be.

My hard drive got unplugged without being stopped

Hopefully, the read errors are not from physical damage.
These are the steps that you need to take, and the instructions on how to do it:
1. Reboot into Safemode
2. Run a virus and spyware scanner
3. Defrag
4. Scandisk
5. Registry error repairing
6.Reboot into regular mode windows

Here is how to do it:
Reboot yor machine while holding the F8 key right as it boots back up. A menu will apear. Choose -->"start windows in safe mode with networking".
Windows will start in safe mode. Run an AVG virus scan, then run Defrag by exploring your computer, right click on C: drive, click PROPERTIES, then the TOOLS tab, click the "check now" button, and both checkboxes, both 'fix file system errors', and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" then click ok, the computer will then tell you it will scan upon next reboot (which upon reboot will take about an hour). Now click the DEFRAG NOW button. then choose defrag. After Defrag runs for about an hour and it is finished, restart the system. If is still won't run normally, go back into Safemode buy pressing F8 on reboot, then run a registry fixing program such as uniblue registrybooster, then reboot again. If it still won't run right, you may want to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows and see if that works. If reinstalling windows doesn't fix it, it is definitely a hardware problem.
PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND KEEP A COPY NEAR YOUR SYSTEM FOR FUTURE PROBLEMS. THIS SERIES OF STEPS CAN FIX MANY PROBLEMS
Good luck.
James.

Starts to spin then stops

Either the power supply is failing, or the drive has gone defective.
Check with IOmega, it's probably under warranty.
If it isn't, open up the casing and see whose drive (ie, Seagate, Samsung, Maxtor) they used, because the drive itself may be under warranty by the manufacturer.
Before doing that though, connect the drive inside your PC and see if it works.
If it does, just permanently mount it in there because the external boxs' power supply is shot.
If it works in the PC and you really need it to be external, just buy an external hard disk enclosure.
They are about $30 in most places, and that'll FixYa right up!

If it did this when you first got it, you should have returned it for a refund or exchange. That drive was bad out of the box.

Hopefully after all this you have back your 1TB........cheers and please vote
