the car cigarette lighter adapter has a fuse at the silver tip of plug, unscrew CAREFULLY its spring loaded, chech fuse and replace if blown.

When you connect the satnav to a computer with a usb cable it automatically starts to charge. However it takes about 8 hours to charge compared to around 4 on a car charger.

There are no free map updates, all of them must be paid for. Even Garmin's "free lifetime map updates" option is an expensive one-off payment.

I've been trawling for unanswered questions; this information may be too late for you (or perhaps it may help you resurrect a useless machine which you have put away) but it will certainly help others searching for advice with the same problem.

You have Garmin Lock activated on your nuvi: there are only two ways you can unlock it.

1. Enter the PIN code (but you clearly don't have it or you wouldn't be reading this).

2. Take the unit to the Security Location you chose when activating Garmin Lock: it will then unlock without the PIN code and you can then either reset the PIN or disable Garmin Lock. The Security Location should not be the owner's home address, but many owners ignore this recommendation. Many owners choose their workplace or a close friend or relatives address for this purpose.

If neither option works then your unit is useless unless you send it to Garmin with proof of purchase. Garmin charge for the service and if your maps are not up to date then it's really a waste of money as the investment would be better spent on a new unit with current mapping.

I hope that you manage to either fix your problem using my advice or at least can decide whether to abandon the unit and buy another.

If you need to change the voice language press VOICE and select an English voice.
If you need to change the text language press TEXT LANGUAGE and select English

Ensure your car plugg gets power (may need the car engine to be started).
After getting power device should start after some time (1 minute max) if battery is completely down.

If battery was not down please perform cold reset, return to factory settings (as described in manual troubleshooting at the end)

Press & maintain lower right corner of screen while starting and after started until you get a screen where you are asked to confirm data being erased.

The reason is that the plug is not pushed far enough into the satnav and it thinks it's being connected to a computer. Push it in fully and it should be ok.

There is a easy fix. Try going into your Tools Menu then Language. Go to Voice and make sure that one is selected.

you can also do a reset. Turn the unit off. Hold you finger in the bottom right corner of the screen then turn the unit on. Keep your finger in the corner until you see a prompt asking if you want to erase all user data. It may take a few try's to get the reset right.

Garmin never provided free map updates. Either buy the current version or buy the lifetime subscription. Go to Garmin.com

Yes, you may charge it using the USB cable that came along with this device.

Use something with a sharp, yet blunt point (like a ballpoint pen) to press the reset switch. The reason it's so hard to trigger the switch is because you are pressing through the thickness of the serial number label and maybe (though not verified) part of the nuvi's case.

There have been a lot of problems with your model - and some people are trying to force a recall. Most likely you can go to the garmin web site and download the firmware updates. You will need to download the Garmin download manager. Plug your unit into your pc [ 2.0 usb ] and the Garmin download manager will help you update your unit.

You should be able to find the reset button near the SN #. Press it to reset your GPS.

Check fuse in tip of car adapter plug. Check to see if rear mini-USB jack is loose or broken.
