The only free updates are firmware. You have to pay for map updates.

Most issues causing this is a bad charger, dead battery or caused by a loose USB port in the back. If the port is loose, the battery will not be charged and won't even work when connected to an external charger. More info can be found here:http://www.sharc.net/gps_charger_repair.htm

I just plugged my 1350 in (had exact same problem) into computer and deleted the GPX (trip log) and it finally started back up. Deleted all of the favorites and such but it working again.

Check the map menu to see if the new map is on the unit. At the main menu, press the tools button then the map icon. Then press the "map info" button. Look to see if the listing shows the new map that you just downloaded or if the original older map is still there. Make sure that the map is enabled by a check mark next to the map listing.

Try the reset, and if that fails, download the web updater from the garmin site and try that route.


Master reset will erase all way points or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
   • You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
6. Touch Yes

Recommend putting your money in a smartphone. There are free tools like Googlemaps which work can give the latest maps. Spending $69 is ridiculous.

You have Garmin lock activated and there are two ways to disable it. The first is to enter the PIN code, which you have forgotten, but the second method is to take the unit to the "security location" where you initially chose your PIN code. Garmin recommend that this is NOT your home or workplace as they are the places a thief is likely to take your unit to in order to try and bypass the PIN.

If you cannot recall either the PIN or the security location then the unit can only be unlocked for you by Garmin. The service is only available to the registered user and only if proof of purchase is also provided. If you didn't register your warranty or if you don't have proof of purchase then the unit is effectively scrap as it is unusable. Even if you do meet Garmin's requirements there is a charge for the service, and so unless your unit has up to date maps the investment is probably not cost-effective.

Hopefully you'll remember your security location and will regain use of your Garmin. If so, don't forget to reset the PIN code, and please take a moment to rate my answer.

Check to make sure that the rear USB jack isn't loose. This is a common problem on ALL nuvi's that are charged by a USB jack only. If the jack is broken, the battery will not be charged. When you plug in the charger, the battery icon with green bars should go away. If you can still see it, your USB jack is broke and needs to be replaced. I've replaced these many times. go to garmin web site and up load map to your device by upgrading .

There are three levels of fixes, please try them in order:
1. Reset the GPS using the Reset button, on the back, just under the Antenna Hinge. Resetting will turn off the GPS, and then turn it back on, if connected to power. Test, if fixed, great, otherwise, go to fix 2.
2. Turn the power off, then press and hold the powerbutton for up to 2 minutes. The GPS will turn on, and display a "PreBoot Mode" message. When that message disappears, and the screen calibration screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions, and you are fixed. If you still cannot use the touch screen, repeat fixes 1 and 2 several times, just to be sure., then go to fix 3
3. The touch-screen glass has probably broken or lost its connection with the GPX motherboard. You can order new touch screen glass on the web and install yourself, if you are techy in nature, otherwise do a search for "garmin nuvi 660 repair" and choose your service.

This is true. Take it back and get another one.

Sounds like it isnt charged. Also make sure that the rear mini USB jack isnt loose or broken, preventing the battery from being charged. Please see this link:

Try to find how to calibrate the touch screen in the users manual.

You are not giving the device long enough to complete the download, it takes about 1 hour. It will tell you when it is done. Call Garmin for help with this, there advice is free.
