Hi on the base of the unit to the left hand side are two outlets, under the far l/h one is a small hole(it should be marked reset) yours could have worn away.
Straighten a small paperclip and insert carefully into the hole when resistance is felt, push just a very, very small amount more. Remember GENTLY DOES IT

The repair function only works on the internal hard drive and there is no other need to use it...external hard drives generally only connect through the archos dvr station which is sold seperately. You can buy one at archos website or circuit city among others...I've been told that it can be done without the dvr station but have found nothing in the archos docs to support this thus far nor have I ever seen it successfully done, in person, without the dvr station.

Since you already install the latest driver and still have the same issue. You can restore the computer to its default state by using the One Key Recovery. Turn off the computer press the OKR button it is usually beside the power button, it has an upside down arrow in it. If still fails contact LENOVO Tech Support Dept for help.

On the Archos:
In the settings menu from the front screen, set your Archos to 'PC Hard Drive' instead of Windows Media Player.
If it doesn't show as an external hard drive when you plug it into your pc, do this....

On the pc:
Go to Start\run, type diskmgmt.msc and click ok to take you into Disk Management.
Your Archos should show as a drive in here and you can associate your new drive with a drive letter.

If you cannot see your Archos in this windowafter you've set it to 'PC Hard Drive' on the Archos, then you may have a dodgy usb cable.

As you have mentioned that you have formatted the unit and then connected it to pc. So first of all check the basic things. 1) Remove the usb wire completely.And check if any dust in the wires or the usb wire is got cut in between.If no such symptom continue next 2) In your pc there are two usb slots in some there are 4 usb slots.So try connecting the wire in other usb slot then check.If same problem continue next 3) If you have any other usb wire which you have confirmation that it is working then try it with that usb wire.If you dont have wire then get new usb wire.The usb wires are not very costly.You can get it from local computer hardware parts store.If same problem with other wire too continue next 4) Check out the usb slot where you are connecting the usb wire in your pc if its got loose or moved then it will not detect the device connected to it.So press the usb wire in the slot with your hand bit tight and wiggle the wire in the slot then check keeping the wire pressed in the slot. What is the type, brand, and model number of your device? Is it the Archos 605 WiFi digital media player?

If yes, then the "System damaged" means that the software / firmware of your device is corrupted.

The old version of the firmware of it is: 1.6.05, that was release on 21st of Dec 2006.

You need to contact the manufacturer and have them upgrade the firmware of your digit media player. The manufacturer knows the version of the firmware that would work best for your device.

If you have nothing to lose, I would consider opening the unit up. I could almost bet it is one of those players with a MicroDrive, just like the iPod. The MIcroDrive is a small HDD with exactly the same shape and connections as a Compact Flash Card. It should be easy to replace.

As far as the battery not holding a charge goes, some batteries have a memory, so the amount of current you recharge becomes the total charge available. Some other batteries just don't recharge nearly enough times to be worth it.

Look on ebay... or find some small speakers from something similar and use those.

Make sure you have downloaded most up to date firmware (2.1.04 - Menu: Settings: Firmware and Plugins: click on 'Online Firmware Update'). Put pin in reset hole at bottom left side. If the battery is new it should last at least 3+ hours on video playback. The battery monitoring system can get out of touch and so the reset may help.

You only need to undo two screws. Next to the 'kickout' stand there is a narrow strip (5mm wide) with a screw towards each end. With these screws removed this strip can be prised out with a little effort. The back panel can now be slid towards the kickstand by about 3mm and it then lifts off very easily. You will need clip the existing battery wires close to the battery and you new battery wire tails either soldered or twisted tightly to the bared wires. Insulate any such joins by wrapping in tape. Simply reverse the steps above to close and then recharge fully

You should be on firmware version 2.1.04 (WMDRMPD:10.1) If connected to your computeer or on WiFi then :- Main Screen Menu Settings Firmware + Plugins and click on.... Online Firmware Update This version of the firmware does allow some videos. Unfortunately if the videos come up with blank screen with a red F9 in the middle this signifies a version of FlashPlayer not yet supported. We just have to wait and see if Archos are still going to support the 605 with more firmware updates or if their hands fare too ull with the new Archos 5 Android.
