MP610 Scanner Not Working

All cables are attached.  Other functions working fine.  Whenever I select scan and press the "start" key (the two buttons on the right-hand side, one says "black" and the other says "color"), nothing works.  After selecting "scan", I receive the prompt to "place document on platen glass and press (insert button symbol)", but when I press the button -- either the one for black, the one for color, or both of them together -- nothing happens.
TIA for any help.

i was having the same problem as the original poster of this thread, where nothing was happening, and this was what i did:

using a mac, i:

- spotlight searched "image capture" (that's what it's called) and opened up the app
- it somehow "woke up" my printer, aka connected the printer to the app, and it would scan the overview, but not scan the final selection that i made. see comnomad's post if you don't know the difference between overview vs. scan.
- so i restarted my printer
- i then did the overview, selected the parts that i wanted, and scanned it again

tada!

Can't enable Bi-directional support for Canon MP610

Hello all,

I just bought the Apple Airport Extreme N Base, and was initially very excited to see that it had a USB port which supposedly allows for network sharing of printers and/or hard drives.

Unfortunately, when I attempt to print to my Canon, it gives me the error "Cannot communicate with the printer. Turn Enable bi-directional support on in the printer's Properties dialog box." I went into the printer properties, then ports, and saw that bi-directional support is off AND grayed out, so I cannot even select it. The apple airport also can detect my hard drive size in GB, but it is not accessible. Both the printer and hard drive are connected through a USB hub to the Airport Extreme.

I have Windows Vista 32 Bit operating system and a Toshiba Satellite, their new Fusion line.

Any help will be much appreciated... Thank you!

Canon MP620 Wireless All-In-One can't print to it

I'm receiving a 300 error msg when trying to print wirelessly to my MP620 from my MacBook, running 10.4.11. I use the D-Link as my wireless router. I see the printer on my printer list as my default printer. The printer works fine if I want to print a test page from the Printer Setup Utility. But that's the ONLY thing that I can print. Trying to print from ANY application (Pages, Safari, Firefox, TextWrangler, NeoOffice, PDF) produces only the Error 300 message.

The Printer Setup Utility shows my printer is set up wireless and all appears fine.

But, in the System Preferences panel, the Print & Fax setup shows the MP620 Location as "Directly attached via USB". Which it is not. And I can't figure out how to change that. I think this might be the real problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Hi
I had exactly the same problem. Here is how I solved it.

I deleted all the previously installed items (although this might not actually be necessary). Then I re-installed using the 'Easy Instal' option from the CD.

The CRUCIAL part is this: - after you have tested your connection to the printer - and it is all fine - another box should appear with a MAC address for the Scan Twain. Highlight the string of numbers and click APPLY.

THEN THE MOST IMPORTANT BIT - look at page 54 in the set-up guide. And follow the instructions which are:

When the printer utility opens click ADD - then go to 'more printers' select the MP620 with the string of numbers after it. This is the one you want NOT the one that appears automatically when you complete the installation.

make this printer your default and away you go! That should work as it has for me and i have been pulling my hair out on this for about 3 weeks!

Mollmal...if you read the previous posts you would realize that the grayscale option still uses color....and does not solve the problem...there are two black ink cartridges in my printer...a small one that goes with all the color ones and a large black ink resevoir...the small one is completely empty...the big one is full....I think what people want to know is ....how do they print in black and white solely from the big one...I would like to know also

Canon MP610 out of black ink

Hi,
My Canon MP610 has just run out of the black ink cartridge, but still has the other colours available - i desperately need to print 1 page and can't get a new cartridge right now. Is there anyway I can get the printer to think it has all the cartridges in it, so it will print for me???

Cannon Pixma MP610 - when the black ink is empty and you receive the replace ink message, then hold down the "cancel" button for 5 seconds or so and it the printer automatically bypasses the problem. It does work but Ive had mixed success in terms of the print quality when doing this.

I have the same model. The only thing that work was simultaneously holding down the HOME and STOP buttons for about 5 seconds. The blinking yellow light stopped and I was able to scan.

PIXMA MP610 can't scan without ink (makes no sense)

I seem to have the very same problem... Is it really not possible to scan digital data to my computer without the printer having enough ink (even though scanning requires no ink) ?? If so, we have a significant design flaw (or ink selling scam) there with the PIXMA MP610

You can scan when out of ink. You have to press and hold the reset button (red triangle inside a circle) for five seconds which tells the printer to ignore ink problems and continue.

how do i clean a purge unit on mp610 canon? where is it located?

the purge unit is located where the print head rest itself.. normally it's under the right side of the printer.
You will need to remove the cover in order to clean the purge unit, you have to be very careful as the purge unit might have small spring and if it's not fitted correctly, it will damage the purge unit.
Easiest way to clean it is switch on the printer, and open the front or top cover...let the print head move to replacement position then pull the power out and clean the purge unit. It's a messy thing as it will be fill with ink. U can clean it using tissue and moist cloth... apart from that, don't think you can clean much of it unless you are able to open the whole printer up then you will have a better view and space to clean it.
