From your program select File - Print. In the window that opens up there should be a button marked Preferences or Properties. Select that to see the available options for your printer. There should be an option to select Black and White. They may call it monochrome too. Select that and it will print only using black ink.

Your approach is correct however it doesn't look like the MF4270 provides for these settings. One might expect to be able to select G3 or ECM or set a lower TX speed. I located the settings for different Canon Fax machines here: VoIP Fax Settings

This kind of error indicates that your toner is not properly set or there is some paper jam. so please follow the instruction and open the panel and remove the toner and check for any kind of paper piece and than refit toner properly and close the panel and than check you will definatly able to resolve the problem ok
