If this is a CRT then you do not have a choice to get digital over analog. It is an analog TV. It sounds that the laser pickup unit to your disc player is either faulty or dusty. Insert a lens cleaning disc into the player, and play it for at least two times. If the fault is with dust or dirt, this must solve the problem. If not, make sure that the optical pickup unit is faulty, and should be replaced. since you have confirmed that the remote is working, then it means the problem lies with the TV.

There is a sensor in the TV that communicates with the remote. If this sensor is defective, the remote won't communicate with the TV.

The TV sensor might have loosed contact from inside of the TV or it maybe defective and need to be replaced.
