Try setting the level to low...with the lid open, you can watch the water fill. Once the water gets to the proper level, it should change to the agitate mode. If you now switch the level to a higher level, it should stop agitating and start filling again. Note: some machines require you to turn the level control knob to the HIGH setting before it will change to a new level.

It takes several steps to get the front off. None of the steps is particularly hard, but you can't just take the front off without disassembling several other pieces first. The top needs to come off first, them the soap tray, the control panel, etc. The easiest way to learn is to go watch avideo on youtube. Try searching for "Samsung washer disassembly". There were several good videos there. As I recall, you don't need anything more than a couple of screwdrivers and a needlenose pliers (for the wire band that holds the front seal in place). Watch the video and you can have it apart in 15 minutes.
