Hit the talk button without dialing a phone number and see if you are getting the noise without actually dialing someone. If so, try again this time closer to the base. If this is the case, it is possible that you have a defective handset.

If you are getting the noise when you are actually talking to someone, talk to you service provider to have your phone service checked.

Also, if you have a DSL internet service at home, make sure that you are using a DSL filter.
