I have a perfect answer for you. I am assuming that this question is with regards to the number of rings for fax messages,right?
Choose Setup Menu(that would be the wrench icon on the front panel) Choose Tools>Basic Fax Setup>Rings to Answer. Here you could choose the number of rings,and make sure to press OK to confirm.

Tip:The number of rings on the fax machine must always be two rings higher than the answering machine,if you are using one that is.

If your cartridge error is coming then please replace your cartridge and or buy the new cartridge in Hp Service Center.

Your fax machine thinks that your phone is using your dial up connection. Make sure that nobody is using your phone and that it is on the hook.

In most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken . Sometimes it is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the PC command or can be an issue with ink drying or poor ink cartridge contacts.
