Thermador MBBS Microwave Oven - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Thermador Built-In Microwave MBBS/01 Diminished Power
Smell could indicate burnt rectifier or mag. ( Or Both) Even a partially shorting transformer that hasnt yet fully shorted out and blown your fuse. I do not know that unit, but if it would happen to have 2 mag systems you could lose 1 and it still heat but probably only at around half power. It has been a long while since I have had to work on a Thermadore. But last time I did I rememeber most of their parts distributors I used to work with had all closed. Do you still have a manuel for that unit from when you purchased it?? Try to find a contact phone number to see if you can call thermador. Ask them if they have anyone in your area doing service for them. While it may no longer be under warranty, a servicer who represents them will have parts, or acces to parts and service literature that other servicers will not.
Replacement or fix
just replaced our 6 year old Thermador MBBS ($750) with a GE JES2051SNSS
from Home Depot ($179). The bottom guide piece from the Thermador
bolted right on the bottom of the GE and positioned the new unit so the
front trim piece fit perfectly.

see the following steps , use the VOM and fix it. God bless you
- Check the power diodeThis
electronic component is responsible for transmitting current in one
direction. If the diode becomes defective it will cause your microwave
to not heat. Test the diode and replace it if necessary.
- High voltage capacitorResponsible
for storing electricity, this part is a key component in any microwave.
Remove, discharge, and test the capacitor to determine if it requires
replacement.
- Damaged magnetronResponsible
for generating waves and producing heat. When your microwave is no
longer heating properly, replacement will be required.
- Thermal CutoffsExamine
the thermal cutoffs on both the magnetron and the oven itself. Take off
one of the leads and using a volt-ohm meter on RX1, check the terminals.
If you get a result other than zero, replace the thermal cutoffs.
I need to buy a new MBBS Thermador Microwave
I spent the better part of three days trying to find a microwave that will fit and it's hard because so many are on line only. Last night I successfully installed the 2.2 cu. ft. GE profile counter top unit with inverter technology. The unit is an exact match, the Thermador even fits in the GE box with the styrofoam! I installed the venting materials for the side and rear vents and the platform at the bottom. I put the clips and decorative molding on and it's perfect! I found it in stock at Lowe's for $198. I took me about 45 minutes total to install. If I can do it, anyone can - 48 year old mom with 5 kids!
Loud buzz or tone and does not heat
Most often this is a shorted high voltage diode or bad magnetron. You didn't mention your full model number, which we would need to help you better.
In many models, there is a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit
behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components. You can find

model number here.

Thermador opion 3 micrawave does not work
First if it has a turntable and everything lights up etc, does the table move or not? If it does but no heat/cook possible inverter board or even the Magnetron unit.If table does not turn it may be a safety switch located in the unit that is not engaged (have to get at from inside unit).
Is there a replacement microwave for thermador
Thermador doesn't make one, but we found the GE JEB1860SM1SS from Home Depot fit perfectly. For only $259. The repair to fix our Thermador was $618. It was only 5 years old. I couldn't believe it already went out. I won't be buying anymore Thermador appliances.
My microwave heats up for 3 seconds and then shuts
Since you didn't mention the model number, I have to be kind of general. This may be due to the internal cooling fan's not working or a "noisy magnetron".
For more on noisy magnetrons, see this FixYa solution even if your brand and model number is different. You can find links to helpful exploded view diagrams and part ordering help

Buzzing spark / flashing
The magnetron is most likely the problem, it heats the food and is the heart of the of the microwave oven, if it was followed by unusual odor more noticeable when you open the door that would confirm it, but that is not always the case. The cost to repair would exceed the cost of a new one
I need to replace the
Waveguide "cover"I presume? The waveguide is part of the chassis and cannot be replaced.

My microwave has power but does not heat anything.
It is likely that the main power supply Diode has failed due to a failure of the Magnetron tube (they can become "gassy" inside leading to over current and diode failure). Replacing the diode will not help in most cases.
Everything appears to be working (lights and
Unfortunately it is most likely the magnetron that has failed, "heats food" the other two possibilities are the high voltage capacitor and diode that work in conjunction with the magnetron. It is probably cheaper to replace the oven with an new one.
