If your battery has been installed for a long time [and never removed] you can get CORROSION build-up on your terminals [as with any battery]. This will quite often prevent correct charging from happening. Try removing your battery and cleaning the metal terminals [also clean the contact points in your computer for the same reason]. High humidity work-place situations can also cause this problem. OR your battery may be at the end of its "useful life" [around 2 years or so if constantly used without an AC power source]; so you may need to replace your battery. I assume you have already turned your laptop over to find dust clogging up the vents. Opening the laptop should not be needed in order to remove the dust. You can use a standard household vacuum cleaner hose to vacuum the vents. If you prefer, and would like for more air flow during this process, you can remove the battery from the unit.

No you don't need a driver. These are very plain powered speakers that come with a mains adapter and a lead with a 3.5mm stereo jack at both ends. Plug one in the speaker and the other into the headphone jack on the front or the speaker socket on the back which will either be a socket on the motherboard, or if your son put a sound card in the computer, it will be in a sound card. If it doesn't play straight away, go into Settings - Audio and make sure the sound card or the On-Board Audio is enabled.
