If it keeps trying to restart it sounds like a problem a lot of HP and Compaq models are having. If you can get on the Compaq or HP website, they list all the models they are offering a one time fix at no charge, even if out of warranty.( My wife just had the same problem with her HP}

Prior to having this problem were getting any messages stating that your computer was unprotected. What kind of security does your brothers laptop have.

When you plugged the power cord back in did the green light on the power cord battery light up. How long have you had the cord. Make sure the power cord is working properly.

which os u have.......???????????? if it is vista go to device manager and there to sound.game control settings install it from there or go to system recovery in that go to softwares installatio  then install sound drivers

Try to remove and reinstall the HD and memory module(s) and see if that doesn't help. If not, get back to me for some more ideas. Thanks!

If you are unfamiliar with driver updates for a Compaq please repost and I will walk you through. Steve Medley

you will need to get a recovery cd from your manufacturer. with this you can boot the computer from the cd and procede to format and install windows on the new drive. they usually will charge $20 or so for recovery cds.

when you get the cd, put it in the drive and boot the computer. it should load from the cd. if it doesn't, you need to enter the bios to change the boot order. usually you hit a button at startup (del, spacebar, etc) to enter bios, the info is usually displayed on screen.

If he chewed far enough into the cord that it shorted out, then the power supply would have been killed instantly, but not before taking out the motherboard on the laptop with it.

The motherboards for laptops are rediculously expensive and a new laptop would be the way to go.

The next best option is to hunt around on eBay and look for one that has been dropped and had the screen smashed. You could salvage the motherboard from it, or transfer your screen the other way.
The good news is, people will pay good money for dead laptops on eBay for that very reason, so you could always sell yours there to help cover the costs of a new laptop.

I also upgraded a new Compaq C751NR from Vista to XP, and the last yellow tag in device manager was-acpiHPQ0006

I used the driver from ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38171.exe

and used the 'setup.exe' in the folder. Worked perfectly.

You should be able to find owner, saervice, and hardware manuals from the link bellow.

Like in Desktops, there wont be Reset Buttons available for Notebooks.

If you want to reset the Notebook, all you need to do is to press hold the Power button for 6 to 10 seconds so that the Notebook will be turned off.

The same applies for desktops which donot have Reset button or if the reset button is not working.

the sound card driver must be missing.

uninstal the driver detective, unless you paid for it?
also uninstall the old driver and then install the new one from the website let me know if you need more assistance with this.

You need to install the newest direct x into your laptop.

u use HP Compaq Presario C304NR in this notebook there is one built in recovery partition
when u get boot it display press F12(or any Function key) for recovery press this & follow the instruction

Warning: in this process All data will be lost there is no any option to get it with your data

It the notification occurred while the AC adapter was connected to the system, then I'd suspect the AC adapter 1st.

If available, try another compatible ac adapter and see if the system powers on.

Since the system will not power on with AC adapter alone, I suspect it has failed.

Places Like Best Buy, should have a bench AC adapter you could test to see if the system powers on, if so, then buy a replacement.

If under warranty, contact HP tech support.

its an OS issue you just have to back up all the data you have and then go for an operationg systen reinstall
