Compaq C304nr Bios problems.

This HP Support, the page for Compaq Presario C304NR, and the Manuals page,
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3245634&lang=en&

Go down to the first download in the list -> HP G3000 Notebook PC and Compaq Presario C300 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide, and click on it. (HP bought out Compaq.
Compaq Presario C304nr is part of the Compaq Presario C300 Series)

This download states that it's a guide, but in reality it's a Service Manual. It's a PDF file. After you click on the above, it may take up to 30 seconds before you see anything. Most of the time in 10 to 15 seconds, you see the first page. Let it fully download before looking through it.
You can save a copy so that you don't have to download it again, and also so you can burn a copy off to CD disk.

After the PDF file FULLY downloads go up to the top headings. Click on the Floppy Disk icon. It's the second icon from the left. Hovering your mouse cursor on it will briefly reveal, "Click to save this file to your computer or another location"

In the next small window, (Save a copy..), write down the letter/number that is in the -> File name:, box. (It's c00753552.pdf), so you can find it later. It will either be in your My Documents folder, (Start>My Documents), or on your desktop screen. When you see it, double-click on it to open it.

Read starting at Page 87 for Removal and Replacement Preliminaries, first, then go to Page 111 to remove the RTC battery.

I suggest you go to section 2.4 for the Troubleshooting Flowcharts.

I have a Presario C501 that needs an XP professional operating sy

Pain! If you don't have any important files on the computer, you can wipe the whole mess off with the XP install disc. when the computer boots up, just hit delete or insert or whatever it flashes when it says " hit <KEY> for setup... it won't say KEY, but it'll have some abbreviation for the key you need to hit. So once you've hit it's magic key, and it takes you into the setup menu, find an option that says "primary boot device" and switch it to the CDROM drive. Throw the XP install disc in the drive, and restart. It'll walk you through. Just tell it you want to remove the existing operating system and it'll wipe everything clean, restart a bunch, and give you a great many progress bars along the way (best do do this while you're watching a movie on the TV or something)... once XP is up and running, restart again, hit the magic key, and set the Primary Boot Device to the hard drive again, and there you are. On the other hand, you may be lucky enough that the XP install disc can just be double-clicked from the Computer entry on the Start menu. That's vastly easier than all the punching of buttons and tampering of settings I just described.. to get XP, there are a number of ways, but among the easiest is to just run to your favorite computer/electronics store and grab a copy.... It should be less than $100 or at least near that. Alternatively, find a used computer retailer, and tell them you want to switch it, and they can probably hook you up with a fully licensed copy for a lot less, plus they'll do the switch for you for anywhere from free to about $40, depending on how hungry/unscrupulous they are. Just make sure you get some sort of guarantee on it in case it conks out on you in the first few weeks of use and abuse. Good Luck!

Cant install recovery disks after a hard drive reformat!

the recovery disk is designed to repair or restore a system to its previous factory condition and is not a full installation. the formating of your hdd would have erased all the data required for this process to be completed. you can try a recovery utility that may be able to help you at this link. the disk might not have been saved in an .iso format to tell the computer to run it before starting an OS. if this disk is recognized and runs on your system then you will need to attempt a recovery, which is unlikely since the drive has allready been formated many necessary system files may not be able to be restored. at this point a complete new install will be necessary.
Good Luck!

CD-ROM DOESNOT WORK

one reason may be that your writer may be old and the lense must have died.

another is that the lense require cleaning.

the last one is that you need to upgrade the drivers and firmware for your writer. if its sony, you will get here.

If all the above things dont work, replace it.

Compaq wont Boot

Apart that replacing the motherboard on a laptop is a difficult and expensive operation, component inside must be tested, as the problem is not necessarily the motherboard.

Try first starting the laptop without the battery, and only power adapter.

If it still does not start, and the AC charger has the right voltage (the one written +- .5 on reading) the laptop must be taken apart and tested.

The most likely is that the AC socket on motherboard had shorted or another component near the socket had blown because of the original accident.
