I have a Presario C501 that needs an XP professional operating sy
Pain! If you don't have any important files on the computer, you can wipe the whole mess off with the XP install disc. when the computer boots up, just hit delete or insert or whatever it flashes when it says " hit <KEY> for setup... it won't say KEY, but it'll have some abbreviation for the key you need to hit. So once you've hit it's magic key, and it takes you into the setup menu, find an option that says "primary boot device" and switch it to the CDROM drive. Throw the XP install disc in the drive, and restart. It'll walk you through. Just tell it you want to remove the existing operating system and it'll wipe everything clean, restart a bunch, and give you a great many progress bars along the way (best do do this while you're watching a movie on the TV or something)... once XP is up and running, restart again, hit the magic key, and set the Primary Boot Device to the hard drive again, and there you are. On the other hand, you may be lucky enough that the XP install disc can just be double-clicked from the Computer entry on the Start menu. That's vastly easier than all the punching of buttons and tampering of settings I just described.. to get XP, there are a number of ways, but among the easiest is to just run to your favorite computer/electronics store and grab a copy.... It should be less than $100 or at least near that. Alternatively, find a used computer retailer, and tell them you want to switch it, and they can probably hook you up with a fully licensed copy for a lot less, plus they'll do the switch for you for anywhere from free to about $40, depending on how hungry/unscrupulous they are. Just make sure you get some sort of guarantee on it in case it conks out on you in the first few weeks of use and abuse. Good Luck!
