DVD burning questions.

Before you decide to burn a DVD, it is important to know what kind of DVD you would like to burn. The type of DVD will usually determine the process you use to go about burning. The three most common types of DVDs to burn are Data DVD's, Multimedia Files to a DVD and making a copy and burning a commercial DVD. The burning process will be determined by the type of data you want to burn. You could do three possible actions:
  1. Burn Data to a DVD
  2. Burn Multimedia Files to a DVD
  3. Copy and Burn a Commercial DVD

Burning Data to a DVD Ordinary data such as documents, spreadsheets, database files and backup files require only general DVD burning programs. The data that you burn can be viewed on any type of computer with a DVD drive. Popular DVD burning software programs include Nero 9 and Super DVD Creator 9.8.8.
You will need to purchase or download any of the DVD burning software titles that are available on the market. For some computers that are purchased new, DVD burning software already comes installed and configured for your machine and DVD burner. You just need to open up your DVD burner software, choose to burn a data DVD and follow the instructions. You can usually burn a full length DVD (about 4.7 GB of data) in less than 20 minutes and even quicker with high speed DVD burners.

Burning Multimedia Files to a DVD
Multimedia files are usually larger files that include video either recorded from a TV set, camcorder or digital camera or downloaded from the internet. You may also want to convert an old VHS tape to a more user friendly DVD.

Copying and Burning a Commercial DVD
Many people use their DVD burner to burn copies of commercial DVDs. In most parts of the world, it is illegal to copy a commercial DVD and sell or distribute it. However, you may want to make a copy for archiving purposes.
There are many tools that can copy a commercial DVD. However, apart from the normal DVD burner and DVD burning software, you will also need special software that can decode or crack the digital rights management. It is also important to note that besides cracking the code and copying the data of the commercial DVD, you may need to shrink the file.
Most commercial DVDs are dual layer and have between 7 and 8.4 GB of data. These files must be compressed to fit on a normal 4.7 GB DVD. Once you have cracked the commercial DVD and compressed it, you can use ordinary DVD burning software to burn your DVD.

Hello there brennerc.

Here's your GEEK-steer ...

Based on your description I'm not sure which character that is. Are you sure it's located on a standard keyboard? If not, it's what's known as an "extended" character, with which you'll need your Windows "Character Map" accessory to help you locate.

[Start > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map]
... or ...
[Start > Run... > type "charmap.exe" (without quotes), then Enter]

TIPS:
  • Clicking on any character's (square) will initiate a perpetually zoomed popup to help you see it better.
  • Once you find desired character, double-click (or select button) it to place it into the "characters to copy" field, where you can then "copy" (button) it, and then paste wherever desired.
Good luck, and thanks in advance for posting back ...

  • if you have any further questions,
  • to provide clarification or feedback.

Dell Latitude D610 won't recognize my wireless

Open Device Manager and expand "Network Adaptors" Check to make sure you have a wireless adaptor shown. If no wireless adaptor is shown I would suggest you contact Dell Support. When posting for computer assistance it always helps to say what your Operating System is. Sometimes Windows 10 for example will not recognise hardware designed for earlier OS.

When I turn my notebook

A $20 part, the "inverter" inside the LCD case has failed.

Unfortunately for you, a qualified technician will charge you $50 to $75 for "one hour labour"
to disassemble your computer, remove the dead inverter, attach the new one, reassemble your computer, and test that replacing the inverter has solved the problem.

If you have to ask "how to replace the inverter", the best answer is "let a professional do it".

I was looking for step-by-step install guide to

All you've got to do is:

1) Insert the new hard drive.
2) Press the F8 key as the laptop boots. This will take you into the BIOS.
3) Locate the disk drive priority setting in the bios.
4) Set Priority 1 to your CD/DVD drive and priority 2 to the 320GB hard drive.
5) Save settings and exit the BIOS. This should reboot your laptop.
6) Insert the Windows XP CD.
7) It should not start the setup as it recognises the CD.
8) I will recommend that you format the drive before you install, go along with the format (make sure it does a full format).
9) After the format it will reboot your system.
10) You will be prompted with a message like "Press any key to boot form CD", DON'T press anything otherwise it will start all over again.
11) Now it should start the install. Follow the on-screen instructions.
