How to fix a hp dvd740 that sat for awhile after a pop was spilled on it. I need to know how to set the internal adjustments

You need to stay away from adjustments as that will render it completely useless. Concentrate on cleaning the goo out of the drive (especially from around the drive motor and lense) and retest.

I have an HP dv6000

Not all dv6000 computers have the same components. The term "dv6000" is a generic name for the whole series, but your actual model number will be found on the label on the bottom of the computer. With that number, you can find what parts are used in yours.

Is the optical drive in your computer actually a DVD burner? Many models had a combo drive that was a CD burner, but only reads - not burns - a DVD. If the drive is a DVD burner, it might be having media compatibility problems. DVD-R and DVD+R discs are not the same, and some drives have problems with the +R version. (While the +R, an "enhanced" format, has some technical advantages, the -R format was first and is more widely compatible with drives.) If this is a new problem, and the drive used to be able to burn a +R DVD, it may be an early sign of failure. Like any electronic product, a drives won't last forever and there's always a chance it can go bad.

So verify that the drive can in fact burn a DVD, and stick to DVD-R if that still works. If necessary, you can find replacement drives for these computers, but they can be expensive. Invest in a USB burner instead. You can plug it when you need it, and have the advantage of being able to use it on other computers as well.

I hope this has helped. If so, please take a moment to leave a thoughtful rating. Thanks for using Fixya!

My HP DVD 740 won't recognize blank CDs

Sounds like the lens is dirty. Run a cd cleaner through the drive. That should take care of it.

Dvd 740 media problem

jovanis114 --

If your drive was able to recognize a disk before, but now has stopped... POSSIBLE solution... (don't shoot the messenger on this one, lol!)

I'm sure you have tried, but have you cleaned your optics lately?
Using a Q-tip and a small amount of rubbing alcohol, and GENTLY rotate the swab across the lens, rotating it in the opposite direction you are wiping. This should "lift" any dust or grime from the lens. I would also clean the tray with a soft lint-free cloth (using an air-can just moves the dirt around, doesn't solve the problem)

Hope this helps!

HP dvd740b does not detect blank CDs and DVDs

Hi,

i think you,ve hit the nail-on-the-head.
The laser has to power up highrer to write a DVD, or ocassionally have a dual laser. 1 for read/write CD. And 1 For Read/Write DVD.
Certain cd roms, only use CD- media. it,s probably worth checking which media is supported by the drive.
Also check the drives aren,t conflicting, on the same ide channel, sometimes swapping channels, ide primary/secondary can help, or swiitching Master/Slave/cable select jumpers on the drives Themselves.

My computer wont reconnize dvd r verbatim disks for burning wont can i do to solve this problem

Don't use verbatim brand, some model are brand specific, some problems are due to write capability of both media and burner.

Or check at manufacturer's site for any support of updating your burner media brand support.

If you want, try to experiment which media are good on your unit.
