A shot in the dark here, but try this: Click Start>Run, type devmgmt.msc and press enter. Click the plus sign beside "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." Right click each listing that appears underneath "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and click Uninstall. Click OK on the confirmation dialogs. After you get done uninstalling all of them, restart your computer and Windows should reinstall them. After it is done, try that USB port again.
Turn on laptop, loads fine, screen comes up, then
Try to adjust the back-light on the screen by pressing the FN and UP arrow to increase the light.
If that does not work then it means that your back-light on the screen has either failed completely of works for a couple of minutes and then it goes off. You need to have your screen replaced with a new one.

When the message about optimal performance comes up, are you given an option to press F1(or some other key) to continue? That is normally the case. If you see that, press the key and let it start normally. Once it has started completely, do a full shutdown. Disconnect the AC adapter from the computer and from the wall. Let the system 'rest' for a few minutes. Connect the adapter to the AC power and check to make sure the GREEN led light on the transformer is lit. If it is, connect the power supply to the computer and start it.

My Dell Latitude 610 won't start. I have tried
I have two old Dell 610, both had the problem of not switching on via the button. It is caused by the design of the tactile switch. Over the years, the mechanism grinds away at the plastic inside, and debris accumulates in the switch. Its tricky to fix. Remove all power leads and the battery. Remove the trim that covers the switch. by inserting a small flat screwdriver into the slot on the right of the trim and levering it up. You can now see the switches. Now use a dressmakers pin to lever away the metal catches on either side of the switch. It's really fiddly but achievable. When both sides are free, lift the tiny metal case away from the body of the switch, the soldered tab at the front will break away but it's not needed. Now you can remove the button, and then the metal disc which forms the contact. You should now see a pile of plastic debris, which you can blow or brush away. Re-assemble the disc and the button, and clip the metal case of the button back on. replace the trim. That's it. I suspect this must happen to many devices with the same design of button, because both my laptops had it. Photo of switch attached
How do i restore my dell latitude c600 to its
The Dell Latitude C600 is an older Dell laptop computer. This particular model came with Windows XP pre-installed on it. If you are experiencing problems with your computer, or you want a fresh start with your Dell, you can restore the laptop to factory settings. This process removes all of the data saved on your computer and resets all of the settings back to the way they were when you first purchased the computer.
Instructions:
Step 1
Turn off your computer if it is currently on.
Step 2
Turn on your computer. When the Dell splash screen appears, hold down "CTRL" and "F11" on your keyboard. Release both keys at the same time.
Step 3
Click "Restore" in the "Dell PC Restore by Symantec" window. Click "Confirm" when you are warned that all data will be lost.
Step 4
Allow the system to restore and wait for the message that says "The system recovery process was successful." This can take about 8 to 10 minutes.
Step 5
Click the "Finish" button and your Dell Latitude D600 is restored to factory settings.
