MY DCP117C WILL NOT CLEAN I HAVE LOOSENED THE 4 SREWS BUT CAN'T GET THE COVER OF I CAN SEE THE WASTE TANK IF I CAN GET IT OUT DO I HAVE TO REPLACE THEM OR WASH THEM OUT

Generally washing them out is the best option but you will need to find the reset proceedure for your particular machine to reset the waste ink counters as the counter is what tells the machine that the tank is full. There is no sensor in the tank itself.

Unable to clean?

If you look at the Brother website you will find a trouble shooting guide for your machine.

In the guide, for the error you quote Brothers guidance is to check for a stuck piece paper, however it also states that if the printhead is hard over to one side (righthand side if memory serves me correct), then to contact Brother. If you do so, Brother will tell you it needs to be serviced by a Brother agent, which will likely cost you more than a new one !

If it isnt a stuck piece of paper, the problem is due to the fact that Brother machines excessively self-clean. Each time they self-clean a small amount of ink is dumped in to a holding tank/sponge. When a predefined number of self-clean operations have been performed, the machine refuses to print and gives the error message you have stated. Brother state that the tank/sponge must be replaced before the counter is reset, again by a Brother agent.

However, there is a way of reseting the self-clean counter yourself - if you Google your model number and the error code somewhere in the results you'll find how to do it. The only risk of doing this without changing the tank/sponge is that it will eventually overflow and leak out the bottom, but I did my Brother all in one some time ago and have had no problems yet.

Message comes as unable to clean ...

Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device. You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41,49 or 4F the print head is defective. If the
error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service. If the error is 48 - defective print head cable or circuit board. If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:
1. Pres 'menu', 'mono start' then 'menu' one by one...
2. Press the arrow up or down to go to 'maintenance 80'.
3. Press 'mono start' several times to go to 'Purge'. Finding the PURGE will show some numeric value
which is Iassume the number of times the printer had cleaned.
4. Press 'arrow up' key and scroll for number "2" then press "set".Do the same for numbers 7, 8 and 3.After you have entered this combination, the purge numeric value will be reset to 00000.
5.Restart printer

DCP-340CW purge counter reset

n the mean time you can RESET this purge count back to zero using the MAINTENANCE 80 menu, to continue using the printer for a while until you get the new pads. But it on a tray as if they are full they may start to leak onto your desk....

1 . Press (MENU) (MONO START) then (^) OR <the up arrow> four times, the Photo Capture and Red Exclamation Lights will then flash.

2. Press (^) eight times until you see <8> then press (SET)
3. Press (^) twice until you see <0> then press (SET)

You will now be in MAINTENANCE 80.

4. Press the (MONO START) its a toggle until you see PURGE:6451 ( I guess this means you have cleaned the heads over 6,450 times their threshold level.) you will need to enter the code <2783> to RESET it.

5. Press (^) twice until you see < 2 > then press (SET)
5. Press (^) eight times until you see < 7 > then press (SET)
5. Press (^) nine times until you see < 8 > then press (SET)
5. Press (^) four times until you see < 3 > then press (SET)

The Printer will beep then reset counter will be at ZERO <0000000>

Its the PURGE that will increment by a variable amount each time you clean the print heads the amount will be between 100 and 130. When this count gets to about 64,000 the error 46 will occur. That's about 510 times you can clean the heads before the pads need cleaning.

Almost forget to EXIT the Maintenance mode enter 9 twice by using the up arrow & set key's to exit from maintenance mode in the same way as entering the 2783 code, or power down the printer.

Error 46 and says unable to clean. can u help me plz

According to the manual, the unable to clean error means a mechanical problem or a foreign object in the machine: Open the scanner cover and remove
any foreign obstacles inside the
machine. If the error message
continues, disconnect the machine
from the power source for several
minutes then reconnect it.

Display says Unable to clean and wil not clear.

When you have purged , cleaned the print heads, your Brother Printer about 6,450 times it will be unable to print anymore. This is because they recommend that the printer is serviced this will cost you up to £120 (not bad for a printer that costs £60 NOT!!!)

The simple way is to spend £25 and buy your own replacement pads if you are up to taking the printer apart, see service manual this is hard to get hold of as are these instructions !!!!

In the mean time you can RESET this purge count back to zero using the MAINTENANCE 80 menu, to continue using the printer for a while until you get the new pads. But it on a tray as if they are full they may start to leak onto your desk....

Unable to clean for dcp 340-cw brother

Try placing a piece of Black Electricians tape over the stepped part of the cartridge make sure it covers the whole of the length this will fool the sensor into thinking that the ink is full. If you just cover a part of it on a near empty cartridge it will save not installed.

This check is done to make sure that the print head doesn't dry out but in my opinion these are set too high and you can waste about 8% of you total ink. If you do this before you install the cartridge you will be able to use all of the ink. Then just replace it with a new taped one...
