If it manually focuses and not auto focus you may have a broken ribbon cable in the lens. If that is so you'll need to take it to be repaired / cable to be replaced

Try canned air to blow it out. Try holding some mild compression front to back and see if it will break lose. Otherwise, it will have to go to a lens repair shop. I use KEH photo in GA. They have always be honest and reliable, and faster and cheaper than Nikon.

I do not have that particular lens in my collection, but not all lenses do completely retract to a flush position. If your lens performs well at all focal lengths and takes sharp pictures, it is probably ok.

It's serious enough that you will not be able to fix it yourself. You should send your lens to Nikon for a repair estimate. You will find information on the Nikon USA website regarding where your closest Nikon Repair Depot is located and return procedures.

replace the Bayonet Mount Ring. i had to do it to my nikon 18-55 lens you can get the part on ebay (about $10.00).

If the lens is only four months old then it's still under Nikon's warranty, so there is absolutely no point in trying to repair this yourself. Faults like these are most likely to occur in the first few months of use.

Just send it to the nearest authorised Nikon service centre or if you live in the UK you can demand a refund or exchange from the retailer. Given the choice, I'd strongly recommend the second option.

Yes I think i know whats wrong there is a set of contacts on the lens and a corresponding set on the camera, it's called a "Shoe' well this most likely isn't making a good contact and if it is then maybe there is another fault internally inside the lens electronics?
Now these contacts may need to be cleaned? or perhaps they are deformed and not actually touching the mating set, you will need to check.
However often when this happens and it isn't the actual "Contacts" then it is the actual lens itself. Being such a delicate instrument, really precludes any type of home repair or DIY. You would be best served taking the units both to a competent camera service center and asking for advice, as it actually needs to be examined, by an expert.
You need to contact a head or local office of Nikon, and ask them for a referral to an authorised service center. Then take the units there and ask for the "Quotation" as to prospective costings etc.

When I've seen that before it's usually due to the camera being dropped on the lens and jamming up the motor in it. I'd suggest contacting Nikon or the store where you bought it.

the reason was the motor in the lens. it couldn`t work normally
to trouble shoot this, you should contact a professional service technician,

I do repair camera lenses and yours will have a broken tab inside of it that causes you problem. Its best to list it on Ebay as a parts or repair lens and purchase another one that works. If your lens is enternarly clean inside and out it is worth auctioning off

The finished image looks dark or it looks dark in the viewfinder?
If your question is "the image looks dark" in the viewfinder my answer is it's an F4.5 lens so letting less light into the viewfinder and it will look dark. The big difference will be seen if you are coming from lets say a Nikon 50mm F1.8 which is two stops faster then your F4.5.
If it's the finished picture after you taken it I'd say you underexposed the shot.

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hi.

At a glance you may have damaged the lens connector or the lens itself. If possible test using a different lens to find out if problem is lens or camera.

If you do not have a different lens, test again with the lens you had mounted when the problem occurred.

Remove lens, remove camera battery, put back the battery and mount the lens again. If that does not work, go to the nearest service point, or ring the number listed on the owners manual. Other than disassemblying and testing at circuitry level, there is not much that you can do.
