You can try to manually locate the executable file, provided the install was not corrupt, by going to my computer then to the C: drive, then click program files. It may warn you about opening this folder but open it anyway.
Look for a folder with the name associated with the application name (i.e., nuance, ScanSoft, or PDF Converter.). Open that folder and look for the executable file. Once you find it right click on it and click send to, then click desktop(create shortcut).
Go to your desktop and try the shortcut. If it works, you can drag it anywhere you want it. If it doen't start the program go back to the folder and search for another .exe file and repeat the process.

There are several ways to get Visio for cheap. If you are a student, there are discounted versions available online and in stores. Also, you can check with your school for even cheaper options sometimes. Try the university bookstore if available. Or a Computer Science department maybe.
