I came on here to look for the same solution but it didn't take my comment and so I am sharing what I did from my research, If it says Not registered, press and hold the page button on the base and in about 4 seconds the In Use button will be lit. Release the page button and press the # button. You may have to try this a few times. The first time I tried it, it said Failed. I took the battery out, unplugged the phone from the wall and started all over again. Good luck.

check the charger and the battery please check your profile your phone must be on offline mode switch it on to general mode

Nothing to "set up", just push the button with the little speaker symbol on it when you want to turn on speaker phone use.

Are you sure you have the correct model number? VTech doesn't list a 6648 on their site either.

When you enter a number/letter, the "Mute" button serves as a backspace/delete function. So what I did was go to Menu>Directory>Review, scroll to the contact I wanted to delete, and press "Mute", which asks me to confirm to delete the contact. Hope this helps.
