Western Digital 250GB MyBook External USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive - Page 4 Questions & Answers
Dear Sir/ Madam, I have TWO Western Digital USB
first of all , you are looking at the wrong voltages. The important voltage is the DC OUTPUT, which is the voltage the external harddrives use AND the polarity of the plug attached to the harddrive end of the cable.
if both the harddrives have say 12v dc output and both have the insignia of the center conductor being + (posative) then you can interchange them. and you CAN run a 9volt unit with 12volt DC power, but not the other way around.
Look at your power adaptors again for the OUTPUT and polarity.
should be a half-circle with lines depicting the polarity(+,-) of the center and sheild connections to the hard drives printed on both the harddrives and the power adaptors . This can also be tested with a dc volt meter while the adaptors are plugged into the wall.
DO NOT try to test the AC end while plugged in!!
Regards
I have a wd 250 mybook hard drive - it's showing
Did you try switching the USB port that you plug your unit into? This could help. You may need to reinstall the WD provided software. I believe it is available from their website if you don't have the CD anymore.
Wd 250gb laptop HD only shows 118gb
In XP Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer manager then on the left click disk managment, you will see your 250gb drive as drive0 most likly with partition C and beside it you should see unallocated space, you can right click this unallocated space and format it, then right click again and click make partition active.
Power switch not working
is this a transformer power supply? if so get a volt meter and check output a power supply connector to see if it matches what is on the power supply as output voltage. good luck
Platform MAC imac and Mac
Hello Charles,
Thanks for using FixYa.
Sadly, the problem that you are having is because of a damaged circuit board on the Hard drive. If you missed to safely eject the drive from your mac, this causes the drive cache to get corrupted due to the sudden loss of power thus physically damaging the drive.
You can also try to mount the drive to a PC and try to format the drive from there as a last resort but there is a slim chance that this would even work. If the format was successfully you're lucky enough and should be able to use it on your Mac again.
I hope this helps. Thanks and good day.

Unit will not work
Dropping a hard drive is like a bomb going off for the drive. It is likely NG.You are not likely to retrieve data as there is probably no data to recover. The disc is probably scratched bad inside.
Harddisk not detected by system
Do you see the drive light on and can you hear the fan on your disk? If yes then try using a different usb port and a different usb cable. Check to see if there are any other drives with the same drive letter.
You can find this by right mouse clicking my computer, select manage, select disk drive manager see if the drive is recognized and if it trying to use the same letter as another. If so change the letter and it will be seen.
Doesn't power up
IF POWER ADAPTER IS YOUR SUPPLY IT MAY BE BAD. IF DIRECT TO 115V THEN DEFECTIVE.
Computer does not recognize external hd
right click on my computer , click on manage ,click on disk management , you should see the drive , asign a letter for it and it should show up on explorer , it may need formating or partitioning , follow instructions on screen , best of luck .
