WD elements 500gig external drive. Worked fine since purchase but power supply has now failed. this drive was my main backup and contains sensitive data. PC World cannot obtain a new power supply but will exchange the drive under warranty. I cannot exchange unless I wipe the drive. Is there anywhere in the UK I can obtain a part?
Hi John,
Had the same problem with a WD Elements 320 GB drive, and found a WD customer service number. They are sending me a FREE replacement. I have put the details on a message somewhere on this site, but can't direct you to it.
The number from Australia is : 1800 429 861 ( routed to Singapore )
Email Address : Western Digital Customer Service . [email protected]
Send them details of your mailing address, drive model and serial number, and a description of your power supply. ( my power supply had a model number moulded on the back )
Hope this helps

I brought this hard drive on the 4/1/09
it worked up till yesterday when i was playing a game online (call of duty) and the game just closed down and a error came up saying *can't find missing file*
i doubled click call of duty again to play it again and then it said it couldn't find any files/missing shortcut...
On my computer it says nothing about the hard drive jsut my two normal ones, but it says under *saftey remove hardware* the name of the hard ware...
plus it has started to make a wierd noise like dink dink dink
Any help??
Thanks
Western digital drives are garbage, I was using western digital drives in customers pcs and they would often come back within a week that the new disk failed. This is unacceptable as my customers need there computers and its a bad reflection on me. Now i only use seagate or hitachi and I have never had a problem with either. I strongly urge anybody that reads this to avoid western digital at all costs.

Whenever i plug my passport into a usb 2.0 port, windows pops up with a found new hardware balloon that says ''Found USB device'' I can't do anything past that. If i click cancel and look in my computer, there is nothing other than the usual there. Need this to work asap. Thanks! MY PC DON T SEE THE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE WD3200ME WHEN I PLUGGED IN SO HE CAN T TAKE THE DRIVER THAT INCLUDE INSIDE TO INSTALL HIM
if it came with a driver disk or an install disk then try running that before hooking up your harddrive

Hi,
I have a couple of 500Gb WD Elements USB drives. But my laptop (Acer Aspire 5920G running Vista Home Professional) has stopped recognising them. It registers that a mass storage device is attached, but doesn't assign a drive letter or show them in 'My Computer'.
Its not a problem with the drives, or the cable, because my work laptop (Acer Aspire 5720 also running Vista Home Professional) will recognise them.
Its also not a problem with my laptop not recognising any USB drive, because it will recognised my other USB drive (500 Gb WD Passport).
And, finally, its not a low power issue, because the Elements drive (not recognised) is powered, but the Passport (recognised) is not.
I'm guessing that there is some kind of specific driver issue, but any help with what it might be would be appreciated.
Try going to Disk Management and see if they show up there.
If your computer is recognizing a mass storage device they should show up in disk management and you can just assign them a drive letter.

I'm unable to drag items into my WD external hard drive. When I drag items FROM the hard drive to my Mac, it works fine. But not the other way around. When I try, a circle with a diagonal slash appears on my pointer arrow (kind of like a prohibition sign?).
I'm totally computer illiterate, so I don't know what I'm doing. I tried to change the "permissions settings" on my Mac but I don't know what to do. When I open the external hard drive folder and go to File > Get Info, under Sharing and Permissions, it says "You can only read". I want it to say read and write, correct? Then I'll be able to view AND change contents?
Please help, I don't know what I'm doing =P
OK Where did the files on the drive come from if you can't write to it?
I'm suspecting that It's come from a PC and the disk is formatted NTFS.
Macs can read the NTFS but cannot write to it. They can read and write to FAT and other DOS formats.
If you are only going to use it on your Mac then you will have to reformat the drive.
First, copy every file you need to keep onto your HD (if you have room) then use Disk Utility (in the Utilities Folder) to erase and refomat as Mac OS Extended (Journalled).
Then copy all your files back on
If you need to use the drive on both Mac and Windows use the MS_DOS (FAT) option.

AC adapter model AD6008 for my Elements powered by WD external hard drive has failed. Where can I buy a new one?
There are replacement models for this 5V/1.5A power supply that the AD6008 uses.
One of them is made by a company called "Asian Power Devices" [APD] and their model number for the replacement for this particular unit is: DA-30C01.
I've seen them for sale on www.amazon.com for around $25.00.

Can you tell me how to reformat my WD Elements external drive for use with a Mac? Thank you
You can use a pc formatted drive with a mac but to format it as a mac drive go to applications then into utilities then go disk utility. Once opened in the left hand side choose your hard drive on the right hand side you will see buttons "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID and "Restore". Click on Erase under volume format choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then name your hard drive and then click the erase button down below the name box. Hope this helps

whenever i make a new folder or copy things this appears
I would suggest you to run a SFC scan on the computer.
1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click
All Programs, click Accessories, right-click
Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click
Allow. The access the drive by typing command for example - if you are facing trouble in C drive type C:
2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
