My 'Elements' WD 500G external hard drive is no

If it is a matter of just the power supply failing, you can get a replacement. It is possible to remove the HD and place it in a new case with a new power supply, as well. However, if you suddenly smell something burning after that, you are on the trail to adventure. That might be a burnt out diode, easy enough for a PC repair shop to replace. Or, it might be something more serious and you would need an expensive data recover shop to get back your loss. You could call Western Digital customer service and see what they have to offer in terms of a power supply or make use of the following link: Amazon com 12V AC power adapter for western digital elements WD6400EB035...

WD Elements USB drive not recognized

Try going to Disk Management and see if they show up there.

  1. Click Start
  2. Right Click My Computer
  3. Click Manage
  4. Click Disk Management
If your computer is recognizing a mass storage device they should show up in disk management and you can just assign them a drive letter.

If it's the power adapter then a simple search of the internet should show you where to go to find one. The other problem is that the HDD may be bad. You'd have to open the case, remove the HDD then connect it to your computer. I'm sure this would void the warrenty. However if it is the HDD then you saved yourselp the cost of a power supply.

The pcb controller needs the info transferred from the original pcb otherwise the drive will remain inaccessible or destroy the data on the drive. Take it to a professional. http://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?t=10822&start=

Does it give specific errors in Windows? Can you confirm that the HDD actually starts up (you should be able to even hear the disc spin up)? Any more details that you can give will be helpful.

Yes, this model is certainly compatible with Windows 7. If you've lost the AC adapter and need to replace it, the most important things to look at are: 1) the size of the plug 2) the input voltage of the drive 3) the minimum current in Amperes (A) or milliAmperes (mA) required For units manufactured after June 1st 2008, these are the requirements: 12 Volts 1.5 Amps 18 Watts Western Digital recommends only using original WD power adapters. See here for more information: https://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1378/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzg3MTQwNTQxL3NpZC9aNG1NbVZIbA%3D%3D Tip: sometimes you can find a cheap and original power adapter on eBay or Craigslist or Kijiji.

My elements wd5000E035-00 does nothing

Hi s aarden,
I'm assuming this drive is connected via USB to your PC.
I Would try downloading the newest drivers from the Wester Digital website (if there are any).
Has this drive ever been recognized and/or functioning properly on this current PC?
If so, the first action I would take would be to check the state of your USB Drivers. Click Start> RIGHT-Click My Computer> Select "Manage" or "Device Manager."
Scroll down to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." Are there any yellow or caution icons next to any items under this category?
