Western Digital Elements powered by WD 320 GB External USB (WDE1U3200N) Hard Drive - Page 9 Questions & Answers
Power loss in external harddrive
Hi mjcole,
Couple things. What model WD drive do you have? Plugging the laptop adapter into the drive chassis may have fried the chassis. You can buy a new chassis and put your drive into it, or you can buy a new power supply in case the one you have has gone bad and you did not realize it. Not likely though.
The power requirements are very specific and the laptop power supply may have been to much for the WD drive.
External drive problem
This sounds like an amperage issue.
The elements drive is made to be highly portable and comes without an external power supply. As such you need to connect the drive to your PC using both USB connections on the Y-Cable it came with. Failure to do so will leave the drive with less amperage than it needs to run at full RPMs.
Everytime you try to read or write to the drive, the loss of amperage will cause it to reset. This may cause data loss depending on what the drive is doing.
If it did not come with a Y-Cable, stop in at your local PC store and buy one as this will solve the issue. If it did, and it is having this problem even with both USB plugs connected then it's likely there is a fauly circuit in the enclosure. Have it replaced un WD warranty if able, if not reply back and I can advise you how to swap it into a new enclosure.

Western Digital Elements Hard Drive 1TB Stopped Working!?
Western digital drives are garbage, I was using western digital drives in customers pcs and they would often come back within a week that the new disk failed. This is unacceptable as my customers need there computers and its a bad reflection on me. Now i only use seagate or hitachi and I have never had a problem with either. I strongly urge anybody that reads this to avoid western digital at all costs.
WD external Hard drive 320 GB hangs my computer everytime connect
Try the external hard-drive in some other computer.
If it still causes problems, then it is the external hard-drive, not your laptop, that has the problem.
If the warranty on the external hard-drive is still valid,
exercise the warranty to get a replacement.
If the warranty has expired, you could try to "disassemble" the casing, to remove the "internal" hard-drive that is "inside" the casing.
Then, connect that hard-drive to a desktop computer,
and copy your data to the 'C:' drive (or burn your data to CD/DVD disks), if you can -- it's possible that the "electronics" that convert the USB-interface to the hard-drive interface is the problem, and that your data on the hard-drive is perfectly OK.
External hard drive not detected
Check your jumpers on the hard drive. DON'T leave it connected very long if the jumpers are not set for master / slave (furthest away/ closest to the IDE port on the computer or it can mess up the circuit boards on one or both drives! If you are using only one hard drive, set the jumper(s) for "cable select" (often abbreviated CS). If it still doesn't detect the drive, the drive may not have an "active" partition on it. You can solve that by booting to your OS installation CD -- assuming you have one!
Dropped it from a few inches. Computer wont
try taking it apart making sure that the connections are plugged in
good and tight , also reboot the computer while its plugged in , if
still nothing listen for a spin up and spin down sound or a clicking
sound , the spinning up and down sound means the motor is
malfunctioning , a clicking sound means the units heads are
malfunctioning , if any of these problems exist let me know
my name is David or user name terminalcon just add attention

The hard drive was dropped and now will not fully
This is physical damage....
So one chance is that you can try to repair the os with your installation cd.
Other thing you can do to, is to use recovery software to recover your data if you wish so??
You will have to replace the hard-drive.One more thing you can do, is to replace the electronic medium on that hard-disk with another one which is good.
If you are good in manipulating that, you can find oner one replace it and see
Hope this small tip will help
Any other issue, I will be glad to help you

When you say it won't turn on, do you mean, there is no spin-up and not LED. If this is the case disconnect it from the power source and then reconnect it. If the LED flashes once or doesn't appear at all, the power supply is faulty and you will need a replacement. If you call WD, they will send you a replacement power supply free of charge.
When plugging in to xbox 360. it doesnt recognise
If you have the latest elements drive, it may be formatted to NTFS. The Xbox 360 cannot read NTFS, so the simple solution would be to format it to FAT32. The problem, would then be that you cannot transfer files larger than 4GB or a folders with more than 1000 files to a FAT32 drive.
Hope this helps
I bought a new WD Elements 350gb external hard
This software is not linked with the drive (with this particular drive you only get a trial version anyway). Just remove the software from your PC.
Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Remove Memeo/ WD Anywhere Backup.
Once you have done that, you can delete everything on it (assuming you never manually put something on it apart from the backup). If so, back it up onto your PC, another drive or CD.
When I plug it into the PC it does not show as
Try it in another computer (Mac, desktop, notebook).
It could either be the USB-to-disk-drive interface that has failed,
or the USB cable that has failed,
or the disk-drive inside the casing that has failed.
Try a different USB cable.
Open the casing, and remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a computer, to see if it can be detected.
