You just buy a laptop with built wireless card or built in WIFI capability since you will buy a wireless router, that built in modem that you are saying is a modem use for dial up and you do not need that because I believe you have a broadband connection like cable or DSL internet...

delete wireless connections and reboot,insure you do not have the wired ehternet cable also installed, and insure that wireless switch is off as well for now. when system reboots, turn on the wireless switch and see if the program for IP is corrected.

Any wireless router will work with the DSL modem as long as the modem has an ethernet port on it.

You need to be in a location near a wireless router.
If you go to say Starbucks they would have their own wireless router. Some places like this will put a password on the wireless network. You may have to ask them for the password. Although, most of the time it is open access.

It would be better with Netgear as the setup is easier but I go with Linksys because of the price.
