Freezer is working but refrigerator will not get colder than 50 degrees
First out make sure you understand how refridgerators work. The freezer actually cools the refridgerator by means of the fan in the freezer. Check for ice build up on the freezer wall, if you have that you have a defrost problem, and should call a tech unless your handy them just use your model number, go to apdepot.com and enter the information and you will get an illistrated parts breakdown. Defrost timer, bi-metal or defrost thermostat and defrost heaters are the three parts of that system. Also now you could have something blocking airflow, a faulty cold control thermostat, or the fan in the freezer just may not be running at all. I have a Whirlpool Gold
Hi pab917,
This problem is usually the result of a defrost problem. What is going on, and what is a defrost problem?
The coils inside the freezer are the only part inside the whole refrigerator that "get cold". They need to stay free from excess frost build up so that air can pass through the coils and reach the refrigerator section of your refrigerator. Every eight hours or so, depending on the type of defrost timer or control you have, the compressor and fans will shut off and the machine will go into defrost mode.
When the refrigerator is in defrost there is a heater that is tied into the evaporator coils inside the freezer that comes on. This heater is behind the rear panel inside the freezer where the evaporator coils are located. It melts the frost that has accumulated over the course of time. After about thirty minutes the machine comes out of defrost and goes back to normal operation.
The first thing you can do to get the machine running is to remove the rear panel of the freezer. From there you will want to remove all the frost and ice that has built up. Pouring hot water over the coils is the best method. The water will drain out of the freezer through the drain hole in the bottom of the freezer under the evaporator coils. Once all the frost is gone, you could put the machine back together and it would work fine.
Remember your safety, unplug your appliance or disconnect power to your unit before you begin any repairs.
Hope it helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a whirlpool WRF40 IX all refrigerator. The ...
WHIRLPOOL WRF40 Solution to this problem!!! very easy ----I assume you have a problem with the control board switching on and of erratic when you pass setting 3 on the LED display, the designers of this fridge left the calculator at home that day, ask a technician to replace the Resistors 5, 6 & 7 (330 OHM 1/4 watt) on your electronic control board with 680 OHM 1/4 watt. This would solve the problems with this board, the LEDs will not be as bright as they were but still highly visible. Questions?

Whirlpool refrigerator is not getting cold but freezer is freezing. Can someone help, please?
As the freezer is working you can probably discount that the reason is low refrigerant gas. The other reasons would be that the fridge circulation fan has failed.
or
The channel that directs cold air from the freezer is blocked with ice at the rear of the freezer. It happened to my GE and was caused by a failed defrost timer that was icing up the evaporator coils at the back of the freezer.
A service call lasts about an hour including melting the ice with a heat gun..
