ATI x600 displaying checkerboard pattern when playing games
Sounds like specific overheating problems that only affect certain game engines or certain functions in them or is may be memory leak that only happens when computer has been running programs for a period of time.
No One Lives Forever uses Lithtech 2.0: Talon engine, however it was
later revised to Lithtech 2.2 whose fixes were included in the latest
NOLF patch. Make sure you have the latest patch for NOLF.
Freedom Force uses NetImmerse engine.
If possible try if you have same issues with another games with old
NetImmerse engine. See list here:

Far Cry uses CryENGINE. Far Cry was actually developed by Crytek as a
technology demo for Nvidia display adapters and when the company saw its
potential, it was turned into a game. As a conclusion I would say this
game is very likely optimized for Nvidia display adapters and issues may
be because of ATI display adapter drivers.
If nothing else helps try somewhere with nVidia. ATI has a lot of issues with
old games released before or near year 2000, because of its drivers and they do not seem to correct driver issues on old games. When looking nVidia driver release notes you find more often game specific corrections or maybe they just document them better.
Existing Radeon X600 card in Dell Optiplex gx620.
Check for motherboard or powersupply issues. The GX620's were in a range of DELL models that were affected by bad capacitors.
Failure of motherboards and power supplies is usually due to breaking capacitors. A few years ago a capacitor company stole the "recipe" for making capacitors from another company and tried to make their own, unfortunately they did not get the ingredients right and the capacitors started breaking after 2-3 years of use. They sold these capacitors at very cheap prices and a lot of computer companies (not just DELL) and power supply makers bought them. This is easy to diagnose. Look for capacitors (caps) (they look like little tiny soda cans) on your motherboard (mobo). They should be perfectly flat on top and not bulged or swelling or leaking anything. Make sure you look at the ones under the fan shroud (back of processor). The dead giveaway is the fact that you are getting the same thing after you switched video cards. If you listen to your computer as it starts up, a few of the devices may not start (hard drive, etc). A failed video card will usually give you the "No signal message", but the computer should sound normal when starting up. Mobos are usually expensive to replace because the computer makers have them made especially for them and only order so many. They usually do not have a lot of extras laying around. There are a few companies that will repair broken capacitor issues. Also if you add a bunch of extra components without upgrading the power supply you can suffer underpowered situations and this could cause your problem. Let us know what you find out.
My HD 4850 fan is
Your heatsink fan on the graphic card is failing and the motor is going down hill, now saying it has completly stopped..,.. that means the fan motor is done for and need to be replaced to avoid further damage to your graphic card. Would reccommend you not using your graphic card until a new heatsink fan is replaced otherwise you can fry your GPU and suffer a complete loss.
My graphics card will not
How did you get your drivers and graphics? Did you install the whole package? What is the Asus model #? How much Ram do you have? I'm going to do a little research but let me know what you have.

Are you certain that your mainboard is PCIE 2.1 and not PCIE 2.0?
PCIE 2.1 cards like yours will not work on a 2.0 mainboard (2.0 cards will work on a 2.1 board, however) If this is the case, you will need to get a compatible card.If this isn't the case, have you tried this card in a different PC? It could also be that the card has a problem. The last possibility is that there are power issues. A couple of possibilities:
- An external power connector (6-pin PCIE direct power to the video card) is unplugged. Check and re-test.
- Your power supply (PSU) doesn't provide enough power to your graphics card & the rest of your system. Check your PSU's specs against the specs for your card. HIS recommends a minimum 450W PSU, and I would recommend a good quality Antec, Corsair, or PC Power and Cooling or Cooler Master product in the 500W range for this card.
- You got a bad card, or else it shorted out, etc. during setup or installation.
