ASUS EZ Flash (Updates the BIOS using a floppy disk during POST.) 2. ASUS AFUDOS (Updates the BIOS in DOS mode using a bootable floppy disk.) 3. ASUS CrashFree BIOS 2 (Updates the BIOS using a bootable floppy disk or the motherboard support CD when the BIOS file fails or gets corrupted.) 4. ASUS Update (Updates the BIOS in Windows ® environment.) Refer to the corresponding sections for details on these utilities. prepare the motherboard support CD or the floppy disk containing the updated motherboard BIOS before using this utility. • Make sure that you rename the original or updated BIOS file in the floppy disk to K8NVM.ROM. Recovering the BIOS from the support CD To recover the BIOS from the support CD: 1. Remove any floppy disk from the floppy disk drive, then turn on the system. 2. Insert the support CD to the optical drive. 3. The utility displays the following message and automatically checks the floppy disk for the original or updated BIOS file. 4. Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process. DO NOT shut down or reset the system while updating the BIOS! Doing so can cause system boot failure! more details read http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock754/K8N-VM/e2537_k8n-vm.pdf

Hi can you tell me compatible power supplies for

As long as it has a 24 pin connector for the motherboard you're good to go. How much wattage you need will depend on other components used in the build. Good luck.

Have 2 ASUS mobo's (K8N-VM) Both had swollen caps,

1) I have to assume that you installed the caps in the correct direction, observing the polarity.
Otherwise they would explode.
I should state 'probably' because I have never installed a cap backwards.
Do not know if they explode every time, or not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCSNWi3UHf4&feature=related

Point is if they do not explode every time if installed backwards, then see if you have installed them correctly.
Line the Negative polarity marking on the cap, to the Negative polarity marking on the mobo.
(MOtherBOard)

How close did you get to the stated uf, (Microfarads), and voltage?

2) As I am sure you are aware, it is the Electrolytic paste going bad inside, and forming a gas, (Hydrogen Gas), that expands, and swells the cap's case.
Sometimes though, there are no visual signs of failure, as the paste just dries up inside.

http://www.capacitorlab.com/visible-failures/

3) Capacitors are used as Filters or Voltage Regulators.

Ones in the general area around the CPU, are part of the motherboard voltage regulator circuit, and this part of
the motherboard voltage regulator circuit is for the CPU. (However read on)
These caps are in a Series circuit.
Just takes one cap to be bad, and the circuit fails.

The caps around the expansion slots, and ram slots are in a Parallel circuit.
Takes more than one going bad to mess things up.

However, just to add confusion to the matter, the motherboard will Not have the motherboard voltage regulator circuit capacitors, that handles each specific hardware component, IN it's general area.

For example, the part of the motherboard voltage regulator circuit that handles voltage regulation for the CPU, may have capacitors located across the board from the CPU, plus the one's that surround, or are in close proximity to the CPU.

There may be a cap that regulates voltage for the CPU, and it could be clear over on the other side of the ram slots, or down next to an expansion slot.

The motherboard voltage regulator circuit, has a high ratio of being what fails,
when a motherboard goes bad.

The motherboard voltage regulator circuit is composed of Chokes, Transformers, and Electrolytic Capacitors.
The Electrolytic Capacitor, (Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor), is the Weakest link.

Especially when the world market was flooded with a deluge of bad Electrolytic Capacitors, and they are still cropping up today in all kinds of electronic components. Not just computers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague ]

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/616

Point?
You may want to follow the above link, and see if you can figure out the voltage regulator circuit caps, and replace all of those that didn't get replaced, or replace every cap on the motherboard.

Sounds extreme, huh?
Understandable.

But how much do those caps cost?
How much does a replacement board cost of equal value. (About the same as all of the caps, probably)

Is this just to see if you can do it?

[ I'm a computer geek, and I probably would.
In fact I have, but not to the extreme of replacing all the caps.
It could be the motherboard chipset next, (Northbridge/Southbridge chipset), so you have to keep things in perspective. You won't be replacing the motherboard chipset. But if you do, WE ARE FRIENDS! lol!]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

Video processor being what? The Nvidia GeForce 6100, Northbridge chip?
Under the 'Meat tenderizer' heatsink.
Large one on the side towards the I/O ports?

Are YOU sure the PSU is good? No doubt in your mind what-so-ever.
A PSU with a weak voltage power rail will light LED lights, maybe spin fans, but will not have enough power to turn the Processor on.
No Processor, no video signal.

Just stating in case you pulled a PSU out of your parts pile, to see if you had those mobo's fixed.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions IDE SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they might be faulty

if its a 40 pin flat ribbon type it will be the first to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure dust free connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions

even something as small as an electrical fan and its lead can cause you problems

computers need all electrical power and data to continue through every working device and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

make sure your graphics card is securely seated with no dust built up or in the socket

if you remove your graphics check the socket to make sure its dust free

restart your computer then reinstall it this should activate found new hardware wizard

or you might try

you will need to connect to another monitor or your television to your computer with the vga lead monitor connection

I have a K8N-VM mobo. I flashed it up the other

Reboot, go into the BIOS despite the error message then lower some settings below default values. Save and restart - if you got the same error message again then the BIOS chip is no longer powered correctly, the motherboard is dead.

The south chipset bridge of my Asus k8n-vm motherbard heats up

85 to 95 is ok. Anything higher than100 is pushing it. If possible add a fan to the side of the system case (Best choice) or you can buy a south bridge fan. You're MB doesn't have holes in the MB to attach a chipset fan but you can still attach a cooler on to the chipset. Like this fan; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103155
And you'll need this as well for a good bond; http://www.outletpc.com/c2019.html

Enjoy!

I need to restore factory settings how do I ?

Easiest fix for this is to simply remove the CMOS battery, but there also should be a configurable jumper on the board, in the same area as the battery, that can be set so as to return the board to Factory settings.

FPANEL CONNECTION

Front panel connection are the power on, power led, reset and hard disk drive led. Makes sure all those connections are properly set up or else you will not get your computer on. If your motherboard is color coded then it will be much easier for you on how to that. Just follow the instructions using the motherboard manual on how to connect properly those connections. Else if you are not sure, I recommend you get a qualified person who can do that for you.

Hope this could be valuable information for you..:-) Thanks..
