how to factor a polynomial equation on casio fx-300es?

how to factor a polynomial equation?

Hello,
The Casio FX-300ES does not handle symbolic algebra. So it cannot factor a general polynomial expression. The methods can be found in any book on Algebra.
However if you are interested in approximate factorization of quadratic and cubic polynomials, you can use the calculator to do that. It can solve aX^3 +bX^2+cX+d =0 and the quadratic equations.

If you want to factor a cubic polynomial P3(X) = aX^3+bX^2+cX+d , you write the corresponding cubic equation as aX^3+bX^2+cX=d =0 , then you divide all terms of the equation by a to obtain

X^3+(b/a)X^2+(c/a)X+(d/a)=0.

You use the calculator to solve (approximately) this equation.
Suppose you find the 3 roots X1,X2,and X3. Then the polynomial X^3+(b/a)X^2+(c/a)X+(d/a) can be cast in the factored form (X-X1)(X-X2)(X-X3) and the original polynomial P3(X) can be written as

P3(X) = a*(X-X1)(X-X2)(X-X3)

You can handle the quadratic polynomial the same way.

P2(X) =a*(X-X1)(X-X2) where X1, X2 are the two real roots

Hope it helps.

Calculate Variance on Casio FX-83ES Calculator

Hello,
I am calculating the Standard Deviation on this calculator fine as below:
Set the [Mode] to [3:STAT]. You are offered the choices
1:1-Var
2:A+BX
3:__+cX^2
etc.
If you want to do 1-Var statistics, you press 1:1-Var. A column template opens where you put the X values. If a value is repeated you enter it several times. (there is no frequency column.)
When you enter all data you press [SHIFT][STAT]

You have several choices among them
4: SUM to get SigmaX^2 and Sigma X
5: VAR to get n, the mean X bar, the sample and population standard deviations
6:MINIMAX to get MinX and MaxX
7: Distr the Distributions.

However I want to find the variance. How can I easily do this?
Having calculated the Standard Deviation. I cannot see a way of taking the square of the Standard Deviation other than writing it down and typing it back in.
I have tried the square function and saving the SD to memory with no success. I wonder if I am just missing the obvious here.

This question could be phrased as having got an answer through the Stat mode described above how can I then perform another action on that answer?

Grateful for any advice.

Hello,
I am happy that you found my solution helpful and even flattered that you copied it in this thread. By doing this, you gave me the opportunity to discover an error in my post. In fact, the calculator does provide a column for the frequency. If you enter nothing in the frequency column, all data items will have their frequency set to 1, by default.

Back to the current subject: How to get the variance (the square of the standard deviation).
When you finish entering your data:

  1. Press the [AC] button to exit the data editor.
  2. Press [****][STAT].
  3. Press [5:Var] to open the statistical result selection screen.
  4. Press [3: xSigma_n] or [4:xSigma_n -1] depending on what you are interested in (population or sample) standard deviation.
  5. The screen echoes the symbol for the value selected (the value displayed on the bottom line may be 0 or an old value from a previous calculation: it is not the value you have just calculated).
  6. Press [=] to display the current value of the SD chosen.
  7. By doing this you are in fact storing it it answer memory.
  8. All you have to do now is to raise it to power 2 by pressing the [x^2] key ( the one above the [HYP] key).
  9. The calculator will display Ans^2.
  10. Press [=] to display the value of the variance.
If you are not interested in the value of the standard deviation, but just want the variance, follow the foregoing procedure until step #5.
While the symbol xSigma_n or xSigma_n-1 is still displayed with the blinking cursor to its right, press the [x^2] key above the [HYP] key. The screen displays say xSigma_n ^2. Press [=] to calculate the variance.

As my motto says, I am always happy to help, but happier still when people show true appreciation.

Hope it helps.

You have a way to enter the Variables A, B,C,D, Y and X.
Use the ALPHA key
For A use ALPHA change sign key (-), below the Fraction Template.
For B use ALPHA (degree ' ")
For C use ALPHA (HYP)
For D use ALPHA (SIN)
For X use ALPHA right )
For Y use , ALPHA (S-D) key
For =, use ALPHA and the key below the SHIFT key. May be marked CALC. The = is in the same color as the ALPHA on calculator. It should be to the upper right side of a key.

(I have an FX-991ES that is compatible with the FX-300ES, but since I do not have a picture of the FX-300ES calculator I cannot be more specific than I have been, lest I mislead you.)

The results of calculations involving trigonometric functions are dependents on the angle units. So if angles are in degrees the calculator must be configured so.
To set angle unit one presses SHIFT MODE to access SETUP and select the number that corresponds to the unit desired.

Math Input/Output. This mode shows the input expression and the result in more commonly seen in math books, with raised exponents, numerator stacked above denominator, and so forth. The other mode, LineIO for Line Input/Output, shows everything on one line.

Look at the top left corner of the keypad. If you have a = sign marked on the f ace of the calculator (near a CALc or Solve key) you can enter the = by pressing [ALPHA] then the key next to which there is an = sign.
If you do not have that second = sign, you cannot enter it.
The FX-115ES and the FX-991ES do have that sign to allow the user to enter equations. In your calculator you only have three calculational modes: the general COMP mode, the STAT mode and the Table Mode. No equation mode. Sorry.
