i've recently inherited a used laptopmade by appleits a,powerbook g4.my problem is i need to get into the o.s but unfortunately theres a password.so it wont let me reset it by using the software i got with it.so i beleive that this is possible to do by jumping the pasword wires on the motherboard?is this true?if so i need a detailed illustration of the motherboard.where can i find this as its not in the manual.thank you himedogg from san bruno
EASY - You will only have to acquire install OS X install disks. Boot to the Install Disks. In the menu bar at the top, there will be a password reset utility. From there you can reset the password and choose a new password.

Hello, I recieved a used powerbook g4 as a gift and the lcd cracked after i dropped it. I was able to find the same model on ebay for $100 thinking that I could just swap the hard drives. I realized after that my cracked g4 has more memory. Is there anyway to swap the lcd's or monitors affordablly instead? i really have no budget for a new computer right now. Thank you.
Here is a service guide for the Powerbook G4. It has the step by step instructions.

I can't burn anything. When I insert the blank disc and I have tried several different kinds...it ejects the disc and states that it is waiting for a disc to be inserted. It will not recognize the disc inserted. I have tried a variety of programs for burning and the same thing happens. It will play a dvd. I don't have a program disc to try. I can hear the drive spinning the disc before ejecting it.
Hi Again,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Work!
You need to let me know what type of PowerBook G4 it is as the
instructions for each are different. However, what I will do is give
you the links to the appropriate sites and some instructions for them:
All the best

My mac powerbook g4 will not turn on, no sound comes from the computer (fans and what not) when I press the power button, when its plugged in there is a green light around the power adapter port, and when I press the little button on the battery no little lights light up on the battery. I was thinking that my battery is old and wont hold a charge anymore, but the computer will not even turn on even when plugged in.
pull the battery out, put it back in, plug the mac in, and hold down the power key till u hear the chimb

I was using my Powerbook when it stopped responding. I powered down and restarted. When it began restarting it went to a gray screen with a file folder in the middle of the screen. the file folder had a flashing question mark and the finder face.
I found my recovery discs and inserted disc 1. I restarted and it displayed the gray background with the file folder, then it showed the apple logo, and then there was alot of code that it ran down the screen. After the code stopped running at the bottom of the page it showed, "Panic: We are hanging here..."
Can someone please assist me? Thank you in advance.
The hard drive is probably on it's way out. You can get and run Disk Warrior and you could repair permissions and such but the hard drive is probably on it's way to the grave.
A couple things though. It isn't enough to just put the disk in, you need to hold down "c" while the computer starts for it to try to run off your disk. You can then try to repair permissions and fix the disk from the installation program that starts. When the Install OS X screen comes up (looks like a desktop but with the big dialog box in the middle) click on Utilities at the top and then on Disk Utility. HERE IS APPLE'S SITE for you to read about how to try to repair your disk. I've found that this sometimes works and may help it work enough for you to get your files off, but may not.
Another method would be to get another Mac, and hook the two together with a firewire to transfer your files, then reinstall OS X in your ailing computer. Go HERE to read about this technique.

my powerbook g4 screen is black what can I do?
Try restarting, if still not picture, then try hitting function key + F5 at the same time. Some laptops have a little icon the key that looks like a monitor as well.
If not try hooking up your laptop to a regular computer monitor and see if you can get a picture and fix the problem that way.

Volume buttons are greyed out on screen when I push on them, and they have a circle with line through it below the volume indicator (which is full). I can click on mute and volume and see the sound symbols come and go, but I can't raise or lower the volume symbols on screen.
When I go to system preferences, click on sound, click on output... there is nothing at all listed ("no output devices found"). For output volume at the bottom of that screen, the adjustment is greyed out and mute clicked on the right side, but no ability to click or move anything there.
hey,
so not to be obvious but you have one of two problems either hardware or software. there is a way to check but you need to do a few things. first you should try creating a new user account and see if the volume problem still exists. you create a new user through system prefs/accounts. if that doesn’t work you should try a pram reset by holding down the cmd, option, r, p, key at boot. IF you have never done this before you want to hear the startup chimes at least 3 times then let the computer restart. if that still doesn’t work you should try an archive and install of the os from the discs if you still have them, and if none of that work you most likely have a hardware issue and either the logic board needs to be replaced or the speakers are bad. but either way its going to cost money if there is a hardware issue and you might consider a new computer, im just being honest.

i logged out and all went blue
now i can't get passed the blue screen on startup
apple logo and swirly are there after > blue screen
i tried starting up in safe mode >no respons
i tried target mode > no respons
Basically some causes of blue screen is the RAM check the RAM remove first maybe it is clogged by the dust. Remove the dust of the memory stick and insert it back to you computer. Usually of you have this problem again you need a recovery disk. Load a windows CD to your CD drive you need to boot and repair the windows.

how do i factory reset a powerbook g4 so it has no password blocking it.or how do i get into the computer.
Are you asking how to unlock a computer that is password protected without the password? You cannot do this, that is the whole point of security. You could manually wipe the entire hard drive using another device, then reinstall the OS on it from another Mac, but then all the data would likely be lost.
