Computer freezes at grey screen

  1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
  2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
  3. Click the First Aid tab.
  4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
  5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
  6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

Are there any potential problems in storing lots

No, unless it simply annoys you to have a lot of clutter on the desktop. I recommend organizing things into folders. On the Mac you can even drag folders onto your bottom Dock on the right side of the dividing line... You may find they are easier to access this way even when your desktop is behind programs on the screen. You can right-click on one of these folders to change settings on how it is viewed.

By pressing and holding down the power key for about ten seconds on the front of the G5 you can perform a hard shutdown although you will have lost any changes on any open documents. Once the machine has shutdown you can then restart per normal. Hope this helps.

Power mac g5. Although I show

You've established that you have a working physical connection. But your network addressing and routing is apparently not setting up.
The usual configuration is to set your Mac to "Using DHCP" and your router or other network interface to provide DHCP addressing. (If the address that shows up in the window on your Mac starts with "169..." it's a bogus address that means your DHCP isn't coming through.)
The most likely culprit here is your router. Take your router out of the chain or command entirely and plug your Mac directly into your network interface (assuming they are not the same box) and see if things suddenly start to work. If so, follow the configuration instructions that came with your router until you get a working connection through it.

I have an apple mac

Thanks for contacting Fixya Support, I am glad to assist.

The issue may not be with the type of CMOS battery you are attempting to use, so much as what you are doing once you install the new CMOS battery.

You need to make sure that after you install the battery, before replacing the Air duct and closing the chassis, you press the SMU Reset button on the logic board then attempt to restart your Power Mac G5 and see if it makes a difference.

I would recommend you view the PowerMac G5 manual I have provided for you below, in order to get more a perspective on the process of replacing a battery in the PMG5.

Let me know if this helps.

I purchased a power pc power mac g5 computer from

I know it's a bit late to say - but when you buy from ebay always make sure you get the installations disks that came with the Mac.
You'll have to buy yourself an installation disk (if you are in the UK you can get them cheeper than from Apple at CEX.co.uk) they are standard OS installation disks (Ie. they don't include the iLife set but they do incude Safari & Mail and the other basic bits and bobs). You can get the Snow Leopard disk very cheaply from them or from Amazon.
It's much easier with the disk than the other way without.

Why does my desktop pro keeps shutting down

Just to clarify a G5 is not a Pro or "desktop Pro" (Mac Pro is an Intel based machine). Yours is a "Power Mac". Install a temp monitoring app to see the temperature (mainly the CPU temps). Mine runs around 50 to 60 Celsius and never more than 72. If the temps run to high she will shut down. G5 are great machines but it's not rare for them to go bad. Power supply issues and liquid coolant leaks are well know. Fans controllers have stopped working (the fans them selves are usually OK).

PowerMac G5 Mac Desktop: It will not boot...

Is this a liquid cooled G5? What CPU is it? Need as much info as possible like what where you doing last time it turned on? Have you looked inside the case? Do you hear any clicking when the power cable is connected for the first time? A lot of the last G5's were liquid cooled and a lot have leaked in the past. This small leak eventually ruins the power supply and worse yet ruins the logicboard and CPUs. If you don't know if it is liquid cooled look for a warning stamp on the bottom near front by the CPU fans (inside the case). It states to shut off if liquid is viable (something to that effect). Most times the liquid cannot be seen as it drips into the power supply on the very bottom. I would take it to Apple and have them check it out.

My first Mac: a used Powermac G5 and I cant connect to internet

Hi Christine.
With a cable plugged in The Mac should automatically connect.
Try this. Leave the ethernet plugged into the mac and shut down the mac. Power it back up and see what happens - does the light on the router (1,2,3 or 4) come on to signify that the mac is talking to the router?
If not then I would think that there may be a problem with the ehtenet port on the Mac.
Also, open system preferences and then select network. Make sure ethernet is selected and then click on the TCP/IP tab. You should see a bunch of numbers listed - starting 192.168. or 10.0. and a line with lots of 255. If you get these and the top number differs from the bottom number then you should have a connecttion. If on the other hand you only have one line of numbers and it starts 169. then the mac is not talking out of the ethernet port at all.
If that is the case you should get someone in to look at it.
Post back and let us know what happened.
