Does it stop in spin when you open lid? Why do you think you need brakes

I'm afraid the old up right machines always take in to much water. You have to get a front loader to save on water and it does pay for itself in the long run.

Just leave the lid open to soak, then close to wash. Works well for my wife!

There is sometimes a pause between wash and spin. This allows a little time to pump the water out before starting to spin. Do you hear the pump running between wash and spin?

It might need to be rebalanced or your connection are not tight.
