The preferred approach is to run a ground cable from the turntable to the ground post on the back of your preamp or receiver. This keeps buzz and hum out of the audio signal. If your receiver doesn't have a ground post, you'll have to connect the ground to one of the RCA signal jacks. In both cases the question is, when you have two grounds, which one to connect? You'll have to determine this by trial and error. My guess is you'll get the best results by connecting both, so start with this arrangement. Connect the turntable's audio cables from its RCA jacks to the receiver, select the phono input, and turn it on (with the volume turned down). Turn up the volume until you can hear hum or buzz. Then connect a piece of wire to the ground post on the turntable panel and touch the other end to the ground post on the receiver or to the RCA jack/plug's outer ring. If the hum/buzz goes away, you're good to go and can connect the wire permanently. If not, try the ground cables individually and use the connection that works best.

Any standard magnetic cartridge will fit looking at the headshell, it looks like it mounts by two screws on the headshell. The choice is yours based on how much you want to pay vs quality of reproduction. I use a Stanton 300, it gives a decent sound for me and it would fit yours.

needles never seem to look broken But a tiny chip on them will make the player do exactly what your describing, as far as the counter weights,, spin the player by hand , click the handle to make the arm begin to position itself at the beginning of the record, Now, before it drops, slow down the hand spinning, and set the weight so that when the arm is supposed to drop it doesn't,, in other words balance it to be level, No up or down motion, without a weight scale to do this by the book, try this , Its always worked for me, tape 2 pennies to the weight at the rear of the arm, and one penny to the head of the arm, again, adjust it to be level,, then remove all the pennies,, the arm will have about the correct weight they require for the needle to be correct,, if it still slides, you have a bad needle

All DJ gear must be numpty proof and if the USB supply has been damaged due to doing something perfectly reasonable, I would get it repaired and sell it on to purchase a Pioneer or Denon system.
