im guessing its there way of defrosting the coils , as with this type (small) its tough to defrost the coils in an efficient way , hp runs normal to within one or two degrees of setpoint , hp shuts off or reverses in low speed , back up heat comes on to complete the room heat and to generate the heat needed to defrost the coils , entire unit shuts off when set point is reached , reversing valves set for heat and wait till next cycle now mine does something slightly different : it runs for fifteen minutes and if set point is not reached it switches to back up and reverses the coils ,leaves compressor on (low speed) , this heats the coils up and defrosts the outdoor unit , and if it runs long enough twenty minutes total time , it goes back to normal and aux heat shuts off . this drives me insane thinking how much im spending on heating the outside !! but im sure its needed to prevent ice build up on outdoor coils ,and I sure don't want that cracking with ice formations

if some units detect ice they will leave the fan running in an attempt to defrost the coils. If it's the outside coils and it's warm enough inside, try running the air conditioning for a few minutes, that will put hot coolant through the coils and could melt the ice for you.

Change motor to check do a amp draw find out how many amps motor is drawing this may tell you that motor is going

This sounds like a freon problem your system probably has a leak in the system somewhere. Amana has tons of problems with there equipment. They make there coils paper thin and they split especially on a heatpump. Amana used to be a good brand and then got bought out by goodman manufacturing and have turned there product into ****. How old is this unit?

Verify all your components are operating - Compressor? Condenser fan motor? Blower fan motor?
If not check voltage to any that are not operating.
If all components are operating and the coils are clean - the refrigerant level is most likely low.

freon is low or outside is very cold

When it does this carefully feel the end of the blower motor. If it is too hot to touch,Replace the blower motor.
Your 5 minute off sequence allows the motor to cool enough for a restart.

The important consideration is the rotational speed and adding extra horsepower really doesn't achieve anything because the motor isn't really under 'load' as it would be in say a winch. It is better to stick to OEM Specs https://www.google.com/search?q=amana+80+sse+blower+motor ..

Does the power light come on? If yes, then you can do a reset as below: There is a master switch on the bottom left of the control board. Slide that to 'off' position. Then press the hot and cold switch/key together and then slide the master switch back to 'on'. Please put your response/observation here if that does not work or there is power light as asked on top. i'm not familiar with your specific unit but ..sounds like an electronic gas value has gone bad or has a bad connection when that happened to my friend it wasn't that expensive to have it fixed .. BYW it acted like this for a while then stopped working completely
